A Stroll Through Plaza Francia

For this week’s stroll, I’m returning to one of the most iconic squares in the city of Caracas: Plaza Francia, better known as Plaza Altamira. This square is nestled in the eastern part of the capital, bordering one of the busiest avenues in the entire area, which makes it easily accessible while maintaining a vibrant and dynamic spirit. Every day, thousands of people pass through these spaces on their way home or to work, making it a gathering place for a society that enjoys beautiful, pleasant, and safe public spaces.

Un Paseo por la Plaza Francia

En este miércoles de paseo regreso a una de las plazas más icónicas de la ciudad de Caracas; se trata de la Plaza Francia, o mejor conocida como Plaza Altamira. Este es un lugar enclavado en el este capitalino, al borde de una de las avenidas más concurridas de toda la zona, lo cual hace que su acceso sea privilegiado y al mismo tiempo mantiene un espíritu vibrante y dinámico. A diario, miles de personas cruzan estos espacios para poder llegar a sus hogares o lugares de trabajo, convirtiéndose así en un punto de encuentro de una sociedad que disfruta de espacios públicos lindos, agradables y seguros.

The plaza is considered part of the city’s historical heritage, which is why its urban design cannot be modified under practically any circumstances. This requires preserving its essence while also helping to ensure that our social roots remain strong and resilient, capable of withstanding the onslaught of a selfish modernity. In a city like Caracas, where space is scarce, it is common to build on top of what already exists, but this comes at a terrible historical cost.

La plaza se considera parte del patrimonio histórico de la ciudad, por lo cual diseño urbanístico no puede ser modificado prácticamente bajo ninguna circunstancia, lo cual obliga a mantener su esencia y al mismo tiempo contribuye a que nuestras raíces sociales sigan siendo firmes y poderosas, capaces de soportar los embates de una modernidad que es egoísta, Ya que en una ciudad como Caracas en donde hay poco espacio lo común es construir sobre lo ya existente, pero esto implica un costo histórico terrible.

Honestly, I consider myself someone who really enjoys change, and freezing an entire city in time isn’t ideal, but I do believe it’s necessary for certain elements to remain true to their original spirit; by doing so, we not only preserve our identity, but we also individually preserve memories and relive experiences every time we set foot in these spaces.

Realmente, yo me considero una persona a la cual le gustan mucho los cambios, y congelar toda una ciudad en el tiempo no es lo ideal, pero sí creo que es necesario que algunos elementos se mantengan tal cual era su espíritu original; con ello no solo mantenemos nuestra identidad, sino que de forma individual congelamos recuerdos y revivimos experiencias cada vez que pisamos estos espacios.

For me, it’s wonderful to reconnect with the places where I’ve had beautiful experiences; that’s why I feel so happy to walk through the plaza again, enjoying its buildings, while I looked around. I got lost trying to find the tip of the obelisk. This is a space where nature and architecture blend once again to give us a first-rate public space, which remains intact despite the vicissitudes of time, yet at the same time offers us details that are unique and priceless.

Para mí es genial volver a reencontrarme con los lugares en donde he vivido bonitas experiencias; es por esta razón que me siento tan feliz volver a recorrer la plaza, disfrutar de sus edificios, mientras me miraba. Se pierde intentando buscar la punta del obelisco. Este es un espacio en donde la naturaleza y la arquitectura se vuelven a mezclar para regalarnos un sitio público de primer orden, el cual se mantiene intacto a pesar de las vicisitudes, pero al mismo tiempo nos regala detalles que son únicos e invaluables.

This is not just a walk through a physical space, but also a journey through the feelings and emotions of the past. It seems to me that the city understands that there are spaces that must be fully protected and preserved, and it’s wonderful when these spaces remain 100% functional, keeping pace with society and becoming breeding grounds for a bright and successful future.

Este es un paseo no solo a través de un espacio físico, sino que también se trata de un recorrido por los sentimientos y emociones del pasado. Me parece que la ciudad entiende que hay espacios que deben ser protegidos y conservados íntegramente, y es genial cuando estos se mantienen 100% funcionales, manteniendo el ritmo de la sociedad y convirtiéndose en semilleros de un futuro grande y exitoso.
