A Northern Falcon

Venezuela is one of the most megadiverse countries in the world, on its huge geographical space we can find an impressive amount of birds, many of them are native to these lands and develop their entire life within the Venezuelan space, but there are also others whose passage is fleeting, because thanks to the migratory routes fly over our territory at certain times of the year, but generally speaking no matter how long they remain in this space, the interesting thing is that we can see them and at the same time we can enjoy the unmistakable natural beauty that give us the different species of birds.

Un Halcón Norteño

Venezuela es uno de los países más megadiversos del mundo, sobre su enorme espacio geográfico podemos encontrar una impresionante cantidad de aves, muchas de ellas son autóctonas de estas tierras y desarrollan toda su vida dentro del espacio venezolano, pero también existen otras cuyo paso es fugaz, ya que gracias a las rutas migratorias sobrevuelan nuestro territorio en cierta época del año, pero en términos generales no importa cuánto tiempo permanezcan en este espacio, lo interesante es que las podemos ver y al mismo tiempo podemos disfrutar de esa inconfundible belleza natural que nos regalan las diferentes especies de aves.

Today during a walk through the aviary of the Generalísimo Francisco de Miranda Park I came across this interesting bird, which at first glance seems tender and quite shy, but actually hides a totally different nature, since it is not a domestic species, but one that is used to fly freely through the skies of the Llaneros and those semi-discovered spaces, it is a Hawk.

El día de hoy durante una caminata que realizaba por el aviario del Parque Generalísimo Francisco de Miranda me encontré con esta interesante ave, la cual a primera vista parece tierna y bastante tímida, pero en realidad esconde una naturaleza totalmente diferente, ya que no se trata de una especie doméstica, sino de una que está acostumbrada a volar libremente por los cielos Llaneros y aquellos espacios semi descubiertos, se trata de un Halcón.

It is really the first time I have seen one up close and its appearance seemed quite friendly, but after doing a little research on this species I realized that it is a bird to which you have to have a lot of respect. To start this eager search for information I used an application called Picture Bird, which with just a photograph identifies perfectly the species of bird that we have right in front of us and this is how I can assure you that the images I show you here correspond specifically to a Northern Crested Caracara, a species of Hawk native to northern South America, but can also be found in various areas of southern United States and in some regions of southern Ecuador.

Realmente es primera vez que veo uno de cerca y su aspecto me pareció bastante amigable, pero después de realizar una pequeña investigación sobre esta especie me di cuenta de que se trata de un ave al cual hay que tener un bebé bastante respeto. Para iniciar esta deseosa búsqueda de información utilicé una aplicación llamada Picture Bird, la cual con solo una fotografía nos identifica a la perfección la especie de ave que tenemos justo frente a nosotros y es de esta forma como les puedo asegurar de que las imágenes que les muestro acá corresponden específicamente a un Caracara Crestada Norteño, una especie de Halcón oriundo del norte de Sudamérica, pero también puede encontrarse en diversas zonas del sur de Los Estados Unidos y en algunas regiones del Sur del Ecuador.

The “Caracara Cheriway” as scientists call it is a splendid plumage bird, small in size and quite silent, which is characterized by being a scavenger species, but at the same time is an effective predator whose feeding habits range from small fish, passing through various types of birds, and even reach small mammals, which presents us with a totally dynamic bird, able to adapt to its environment and with the unique ability to possess an aerial superiority that gives it an incomparable advantage.

El "Caracara Cheriway" cómo lo denominan los científicos es un ave espléndido plumaje, tamaño pequeño y bastante silencioso, el cual se caracteriza por ser una especie carroñera, pero al mismo tiempo es un depredador eficaz cuyos hábitos alimenticios van desde pequeños peces, pasan por diversos tipos de aves, e incluso alcanzan hasta pequeños mamíferos, lo cual nos presenta un ave totalmente dinámica, capaz de adaptarse a su entorno y con la habilidad única de poseer una superioridad aérea que le brinda una ventaja incomparable.

Despite having a fairly extensive habitat, this species is not characterized by its migratory qualities, but rather prefers to settle in a certain region in order to fully develop its entire life, which in its natural state can last up to 8 years. At present it is not considered an endangered species, but it is important to note that the advance of urban development in areas where this species of hawk lives forces them to travel a few kilometers to find a new space where they can live, which negatively affects the lifestyle of this species.

A pesar de encontrarse con un hábitat bastante extenso, esta especie no se caracteriza por sus dotes migratorios, sino que más bien prefieren instalarse en una determinada región para así desarrollar plenamente toda su vida, la cual el estado natural puede llegar hasta los 8 años. En la actualidad no se considera una especie en peligro, pero es importante destacar que el avance del desarrollo urbano sobre zonas en donde habita esta especie de halcón los obliga a recorrer algunos kilómetros hasta encontrar un nuevo espacio en donde poder habitar, lo cual trastoca de manera negativa al estilo de vida de esta especie.

According to what I could read in an interesting article in National Geographic this is the only species of hawk that makes its nests with materials that they themselves collect, as their closest relatives usually use the nests of other species, which I found quite interesting, also monogamous, so in that sense I was very similar to parrots and macaws, which gives them a romantic and loving touch.

Según lo que pude leer de un interesante artículo de National Geographic esta es la única especie de Halcón que elabora sus nidos con materiales que ellos mismos recolectan, ya que sus parientes más cercanos suelen utilizar los nidos de otras especies, lo cual me pareció un dato bastante interesante, además también monógama, por lo cual en ese sentido se me asemejaron mucho a los loros y las guacamayas, lo cual les brinda un toque romántico y amoroso.

In general terms we can say that they are incredibly cute, but in their natural habitat they can be considered by many as one of the most lethal birds we can find. Today I could see them behind the bars of an aviary, but in the future I would like to find them in a habitat where they are free, so I can admire their behavior in the midst of the need of nature and at the same time to enjoy those silent, low flights and those plummeting falls that characterize this type of birds.

En términos generales podemos destacar que increíblemente linda, pero en su hábitat natural puede ser considerada por muchos como una de las aves más letales que nos podamos encontrar. Hoy les pude ver tras las rejas de un aviario, pero en el futuro me gustaría poderlas encontrar en un hábitat en donde se encuentran libres, para así poder admirar su comportamiento en medio de la necesidad de la naturaleza y al mismo tiempo poder disfrutar de esos vuelos silenciosos, rasantes y de esas caídas en picada que tanto caracterizan a este tipo de aves.
