Un pequeño jardín

Salí a caminar una mañana sin ningún plan especial. A veces me gusta simplemente salir, caminar un rato y dejar que el recorrido decida por dónde voy.

En uno de esos paseos entré a un pequeño kiosco de los pocos que todavía quedan en la ciudad donde el Estado vende algunos productos en MLC. No esperaba encontrar allí nada que llamara especialmente mi atención, pero terminé fijándome en algo completamente diferente a lo que se podía comprar dentro.

Una de las trabajadoras tiene un pequeño jardín.

No es realmente un jardín grande. Es más bien un rincón que ella ha ido haciendo suyo con algunas plantas colocadas aquí y allá. Se nota que le gustan, porque están cuidadas y cada una parece tener su espacio. En medio de un lugar dedicado a vender productos, aquel pequeño rincón verde resultaba inesperado.

Había una planta que me llamó especialmente la atención. Creo que allí le dicen Corona de Cristo. No llegué a preguntarle el nombre, porque todo ocurrió bastante rápido. Simplemente vi la planta, me gustó cómo se veía y le pregunté si podía hacerle unas fotografías.

Tomé algunas con el móvil, casi sin preparar nada. No busqué el ángulo perfecto ni esperé demasiado. Fueron de esas fotografías que uno hace porque algo le llamó la atención en ese momento y quiere conservarlo.

Mientras hacía las fotos pensé que probablemente muchas personas que entran al kiosco pasan junto a esas plantas sin prestarles demasiada atención. Yo misma, si hubiera entrado otro día pensando solamente en comprar algo, quizás tampoco las habría visto.

Pero ese día iba caminando sin prisa.

Y quizás por eso tuve tiempo para fijarme.

Me gustó descubrir que detrás de aquel pequeño espacio de venta había alguien que había encontrado una manera de tener cerca algo que le gusta. No hace falta un patio grande ni un jardín perfecto. A veces basta un pequeño rincón y algunas plantas para cambiar por completo la sensación de un lugar.

Las fotografías que hice son sencillas. La planta, sus hojas, sus flores y esa parte del pequeño jardín que pude captar en unos minutos.

No sé mucho más sobre ella. Ni siquiera sé si la Corona de Cristo es realmente el nombre correcto de la planta que fotografié. Pero me quedo con algo más simple: salí a caminar, entré por casualidad a un kiosco y terminé encontrando un pequeño jardín que no esperaba ver.

A veces las mejores fotografías de una caminata no son las que uno sale buscando.

Son las que aparecen en el camino.

A Small Garden

I went out for a walk one morning without any particular plan. Sometimes I simply like to go outside, walk for a while, and let the route decide where I will end up.

During one of those walks, I went into a small kiosk, one of the few that are still around in the city where the State sells some products in MLC. I wasn't expecting to find anything there that would particularly catch my attention, but I ended up noticing something completely different from what was being sold inside.

One of the workers has a small garden.

It isn't really a large garden. It is more like a little corner that she has gradually made her own, with a few plants placed here and there. You can tell that she likes them because they are well cared for and each one seems to have its own place. In the middle of a place dedicated to selling products, that little green corner felt unexpected.

There was one plant that caught my attention. I think they call it Crown of Thorns there. I didn't get around to asking her the name because everything happened rather quickly. I simply saw the plant, liked the way it looked, and asked if I could take a few photographs.

I took some pictures with my phone, without really preparing anything. I didn't look for the perfect angle or spend much time setting things up. They were the kind of photographs you take because something catches your attention in that particular moment and you want to keep it.

While taking the pictures, I thought that many people who enter the kiosk probably walk past those plants without paying much attention to them. If I had entered another day thinking only about buying something, perhaps I wouldn't have noticed them either.

But that day I was walking without rushing.

And perhaps that is why I had time to look.

I liked discovering that behind that small sales space there was someone who had found a way to keep something she enjoys close to her. You don't need a large patio or a perfect garden. Sometimes a small corner and a few plants are enough to completely change the feeling of a place.

The photographs I took are simple. The plant, its leaves, its flowers, and the small part of the garden that I was able to capture in just a few minutes.

I don't know much more about it. I don't even know if Crown of Thorns is actually the correct name for the plant I photographed. But I am left with something simpler: I went out for a walk, happened to enter a kiosk, and ended up finding a small garden I wasn't expecting to see.

Sometimes the best photographs from a walk are not the ones we go out looking for.

They are the ones we find along the way.
