The Shadow of a Bench Under the Sun

Hello dear #ShadowHunters community,

This is my entry for the ShadowHunters SMASh contest number 433.

During a recent visit to a hotel in Varadero, I spent some time walking through the open areas that connect different parts of the complex. These pathways are designed not only to make it easy to move from one place to another, but also to invite guests to slow down and enjoy the surroundings.

As I walked along one of these paths, a simple white bench caught my attention.

It combined concrete and wood, giving it a sturdy yet welcoming appearance. Placed beside the walkway, it seemed to be waiting for someone to pause for a few minutes and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

However, what truly interested me was not the bench itself, but the shadow it projected.

It was already mid-morning, and the Cuban sun was shining with remarkable intensity. The light defined every line of the bench with surprising precision, projecting its silhouette onto the pavement beside it.

The shadow faithfully reproduced the shape of the seat and its supports, creating a second version of the bench made only of darkness and light.

For a few moments I stood there observing the contrast.

The white paint reflected the sunlight, while the shadow emphasized every contour, making the entire composition stand out even more. It was a reminder that light not only illuminates objects, but also gives them another way of existing through their shadows.

Many people probably walked past that bench without paying much attention to it.

For me, however, it became one of those quiet scenes that invite us to stop for a moment and appreciate the small details that often go unnoticed.

That is why I decided to photograph it.

Because even an ordinary bench, under the strong Cuban sun, can create a beautiful composition through the simple language of light and shadow.

La sombra de un banco bajo el sol

Hola querida comunidad de #ShadowHunters,

Esta es mi entrada para el concurso ShadowHunters SMASh número 433.

Durante una reciente visita a un hotel en Varadero, dediqué un tiempo a recorrer las áreas que interconectan los diferentes espacios del complejo. Son caminos pensados no solo para facilitar el paso de un lugar a otro, sino también para invitar a caminar con calma y disfrutar del entorno.

Mientras avanzaba por uno de esos senderos, un sencillo banco pintado de blanco llamó mi atención.

Combinaba hormigón y madera, una mezcla que le daba una apariencia sólida y, al mismo tiempo, acogedora. Colocado junto al camino, parecía esperar pacientemente a que alguien se sentara unos minutos para disfrutar de la tranquilidad del lugar.

Sin embargo, lo que realmente despertó mi interés no fue el banco en sí, sino la sombra que proyectaba.

Ya era media mañana y el sol de Cuba brillaba con una intensidad impresionante. La luz definía con gran precisión cada una de las líneas del banco, proyectando su silueta sobre el pavimento.

La sombra reproducía con fidelidad la forma del asiento y de sus soportes, creando una segunda versión del banco hecha únicamente de oscuridad y luz.

Me detuve unos instantes para contemplar aquel contraste.

La pintura blanca reflejaba con fuerza la luz del sol, mientras la sombra resaltaba cada contorno, haciendo que toda la composición resultara aún más interesante. Era un recordatorio de que la luz no solo ilumina los objetos, sino que también les da otra forma de existir a través de sus sombras.

Seguramente muchas personas pasaron junto a ese banco sin prestarle demasiada atención.

Para mí, en cambio, se convirtió en una de esas escenas tranquilas que invitan a detenerse un momento y apreciar los pequeños detalles que con frecuencia pasan desapercibidos.

Tal vez por eso decidí fotografiarlo.

Porque incluso un banco común, bajo el intenso sol cubano, puede crear una hermosa composición utilizando el sencillo lenguaje de la luz y la sombra.
