Dragonflies

Did you know that dragonflies are among the oldest insects in the world? They’ve been on Earth for 300 million years. The wingspan of the largest dragonfly living at that time reached up to 75 cm (you may come across information about dragonflies reaching sizes of 1.5–2 m, but these claims are not supported by any fossils); today, it is up to 19 cm for Megaloprepus caerulatus.
Dragonflies can fly in all directions, including backward, and can hover in one spot like a helicopter. Representatives of the fastest species can fly at speeds of up to 40–50 km/h (some sources even mention 80 km/h) and can precisely predict the flight path of their prey (e.g., a mosquito or a fly) and fly directly into its path, rather than chasing it from behind!

There are currently about 6,400 species of dragonflies in the world.

And mammals?

There are only about 4,000 species of mammals.

Wiecie że ważki to jedne z najstarszych owadów na świecie? 300 milionów lat na Ziemi. Rozpiętość skrzydeł największej żyjącej wówczas ważki, dochodziła do 75 cm (można spotkać się z informacją o rozmiarach ważek dochodzących do 1,5-2 m ale nie są to dane poparte żadnymi skamielinami) dziś jest to do 19 cm u Megaloprepus caerulatus.
Ważki potrafią latać we wszystkich kierunkach, również do tyłu, a także zawisać w jednym miejscu jak śmigłowiec. Przedstawiciele najszybszych gatunków potrafia latać z prędkością do 40-50km/h (niektóre źródła mówią nawet o 80km/h) i potrafią precyzyjnie przewidzieć tor lotu swojej ofiary (np. komara czy muchy) i lecieć bezpośrednio na jej przecięcia, zamiast gonić ją z tyłu!
