Szczytno is a city in the Masuria region of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. Around the year 1360, a wooden fortress was built at the confluence of two lakes, Domowe Małe and Długie, on the site of a Prussian fortified settlement. In 1370, the wooden fortress was destroyed by the Lithuanians under Kiejstut, after which it was rebuilt in stone. From 1525 onwards, following the secularisation of the order and the payment of feudal tribute, the town became part of Ducal Prussia. The castle fell into disrepair after it lost its defensive function. In the 17th century, the castle was abandoned and began to fall into ruin. The tower and walls, along with the keep, were demolished. Between 1766 and 1792, the north-east wing of the castle and the upper storeys of the remaining wings were demolished. The southern moat was also filled in.
