Slowly, my struggles with the house renovation are coming to an end. The workers have already finished their part of the job, and now I only need to take care of a few things myself — painting, flooring panels, furniture, and a number of smaller tasks.

It has been quite a demanding time with very little sleep. It’s hard to rest when the workers next door are practically going wild — loud music, singing, and the constant noise of renovation work filling the air throughout the day. On top of that, we’ve been living in a very limited space, with most of our belongings moved into the bedroom. In fact, our entire daily life has been happening in that one room, which makes normal functioning quite difficult.

And yet, right in the middle of all this renovation chaos and life at the edge of our physical limits, we set off on a four-day trip to Bergen in Norway. We had booked the flights long before the renovation date was set, and it seemed like a shame to cancel them. So we went — and we absolutely don’t regret it.

The result of that trip is the collection of photos I have for you today. Bergen is often called the gateway to the Norwegian fjords. A few weeks earlier we had decided to book a boat cruise through one of the most popular fjords near Bergen — Osterfjord. It’s about a 3.5-hour journey with beautiful views: first across the wide landscapes surrounding Bergen, and then along the dramatic mountains rising on both sides of the fjord.

Powoli moje zmagania z remontem domu dobiegają końca. Robotnicy zakończyli już swoją pracę, a mnie zostało jedynie dokończyć kilka rzeczy na własną rękę — malowanie, panele, meble i inne drobniejsze sprawy.

Był to dość ciężki okres z bardzo małą ilością snu. Trudno się wyspać, kiedy za ścianą robotnicy niemal szaleją — głośna muzyka, śpiewy i hałas towarzyszący pracom remontowym skutecznie wypełniają cały dzień. Do tego dochodzi życie na niewielkiej przestrzeni, gdzie większość naszego dobytku została przeniesiona do sypialni i to właśnie tam toczy się całe nasze codzienne życie. W takich warunkach normalne funkcjonowanie bywa naprawdę trudne.

A jednak gdzieś w samym środku tego remontowego chaosu i życia na granicy fizycznych możliwości wybraliśmy się na czterodniową podróż samolotem do Bergen w Norwegii. Lot mieliśmy wykupiony już na długo przed ustaleniem terminu remontu i szkoda było z niego rezygnować. Postanowiliśmy więc polecieć — i absolutnie tego nie żałujemy.

Efektem tej podróży są zdjęcia, które mam dziś dla Was. Bergen nazywane jest bramą do norweskich fiordów. Już kilka tygodni wcześniej zdecydowaliśmy się wykupić rejs statkiem przez jeden z najpopularniejszych fiordów w okolicach Bergen — Osterfjord. To około 3,5-godzinny rejs z pięknymi widokami: najpierw na rozległe tereny samego Bergen, a później na majestatyczne góry wznoszące się wzdłuż fiordu.

For this particular trip, I decided not to take my camera with me. From previous flights I already know that every extra kilogram of luggage can become quite a burden, especially when you have to move around for hours with suitcases and backpacks. So this time I chose to travel lighter and brought only my smartphone.

Na tę konkretną podróż zdecydowałem się nie zabierać aparatu. Po wcześniejszych podróżach samolotem wiem już, że każdy dodatkowy kilogram bagażu potrafi być bardzo uciążliwy, zwłaszcza kiedy przez długie godziny trzeba przemieszczać się z walizkami i plecakami. Tym razem postanowiłem więc podróżować lżej. Zabrałem ze sobą jedynie smartfona.

My iPhone 15 Pro takes quite decent photos. I don’t really have major complaints about their quality or sharpness, although they still fall short—especially in terms of depth and rendering—compared to the images I normally take with my mirrorless camera. The biggest issue for me, however, is color reproduction. Very often the colors in iPhone photos are simply unacceptable to my eye. Fortunately, there’s a simple solution to that — black-and-white processing ;)

Mój iPhone 15 Pro robi całkiem przyzwoite zdjęcia. Nie mam większych zastrzeżeń do ich jakości ani ostrości, choć oczywiście wciąż sporo im brakuje — zwłaszcza pod względem plastyczności — do fotografii, które na co dzień robię przy pomocy bezlusterkowca. Największym problemem jest jednak dla mnie odwzorowanie kolorów. Bardzo często w zdjęciach z iPhone’a jest ono dla mnie po prostu nieakceptowalne. Na szczęście istnieje na to proste rozwiązanie — obróbka czarno-biała ;)

During the cruise we had the pleasure of listening to a guide who shared many interesting facts about the surrounding area. We learned quite a bit about the history of the city and the rather unique climate of Bergen and its surroundings. Apparently, only one out of every three days here is sunny throughout the year. And we managed to fit perfectly into that pattern. The first day was sunny, the second brought snowfall, and the third — rain.

Podczas rejsu mieliśmy przyjemność słuchać przewodnika, który dzielił się ciekawostkami na temat okolicznych terenów. Sporo dowiedzieliśmy się o historii miasta oraz o dość specyficznym klimacie Bergen i jego okolic. Okazuje się, że w ciągu roku tylko jeden na trzy dni jest tutaj słoneczny. I dokładnie w ten schemat idealnie się wpasowaliśmy. Pierwszego dnia świeciło słońce, drugiego padał śnieg, a trzeciego — deszcz.

Relatively mild winters and the inflow of warm ocean currents mean that the fjord we were sailing through almost never freezes. According to our guide, the ice floating on the water — visible in the photos — is actually quite a rare sight. Personally, I’m really glad it appeared during our trip.

Stosunkowo ciepłe zimy oraz napływ ciepłych prądów morskich sprawiają, że fiord, którym płynęliśmy, prawie nigdy nie zamarza. Lód unoszący się na wodzie, widoczny na zdjęciach, jest — według przewodnika — raczej rzadkością. Ja jednak bardzo się cieszę, że akurat mieliśmy okazję go zobaczyć.

The photos with the floating “plates” of ice are among my favorites from the entire trip. They work wonderfully as a foreground element.

Zdjęcia z „płytami” lodu należą do moich ulubionych z całej podróży. Świetnie sprawdzają się jako pierwszy plan.

Unfortunately, the ice also had its downside. The further part of the fjord turned out to be completely frozen, which led the captain to decide to end the cruise early and head back. As a result, we didn’t reach the end of the fjord, which lies near the village of Mostraumen.

Niestety pojawienie się lodu miało też swoje minusy. Dalsza część fiordu okazała się całkowicie zamarznięta, co skłoniło kapitana do podjęcia decyzji o przerwaniu rejsu i wcześniejszym powrocie. Nie dopłynęliśmy więc do końca fiordu, który znajduje się w miejscowości Mostraumen.

It’s a bit of a shame, because this is said to be one of the most interesting sections of the fjord — the place where it cuts into steep mountain walls, ending in picturesque landscapes dotted with traditional Norwegian wooden buildings. For now, though, I only know it from photos I’ve seen online.

Trochę szkoda, bo to jeden z najciekawszych odcinków fiordu — miejsce, w którym wcina się on w wysokie ściany górskie, a na jego końcu czekają malownicze krajobrazy uzupełnione tradycyjną drewnianą norweską zabudową. Wiem to jednak jedynie ze zdjęć oglądanych w internecie.

Despite all that, we were still very happy with the trip. The fjord made a huge impression on me, and the cloudy weather actually added even more charm to the place.

Mimo to i tak byliśmy zadowoleni. Fjord zrobił na mnie ogromne wrażenie. Pogoda mimo, że pochmurna dodała mu uroku.

During the cruise we were accompanied alternately by rain and strong winds. The sun tried to break through the clouds only for brief moments, but without much success.

Podczas rejsu na przemian towarzyszył nam deszcz i silny wiatr. Słońce jedynie w krótkich momentach próbowało się przebić, ale bezskutecznie.

This cruise was the highlight and the perfect finale of our trip. Not long after it ended, we were already heading back to the airport.

Ten rejs był zwieńczeniem naszej podróży i najlepszym jej punktem. Niedługo po nim wracaliśmy już na lotnisko.
