Hello Photography Lovers Community!

Some time ago I shared with you a series of photographs from Hala Gąsienicowa. Today I would like to present another set, created during the same hike — a few kilometers further, deeper into the highest mountains of Poland, almost at the very foothills of the High Tatras.

Black Pond Gąsienicowy (Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy) is a glacial lake located at an altitude of 1,624 meters above sea level. Like Hala Gąsienicowa, it is part of the Gąsienicowa Valley. With a surface area of approximately 18 hectares, it is the fifth largest lake in the Tatra Mountains.

Jakiś czas temu prezentowałem Wam zdjęcia z Hali Gąsienicowej. Dziś mam dla Was kolejny zestaw, który powstał podczas tej samej wędrówki – kilka kilometrów dalej, w głąb najwyższych gór Polski, niemal u samych podnóży Tatr Wysokich.

Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy to jezioro pochodzenia polodowcowego, położone na wysokości 1624 m n.p.m. Podobnie jak Hala Gąsienicowa stanowi część Doliny Gąsienicowej. Przy powierzchni około 18 hektarów jest piątym co do wielkości jeziorem w polskich Tatrach.

Zapraszam Was do obejrzenia zdjęć oraz zapoznania się z krótkim opisem tego niezwykłego miejsca, otoczonego potężnymi górskimi szczytami. Zaczynajmy.

🇬🇧 You won’t actually see the lake itself in these photographs. In late autumn, it turns into a vast ice rink covered with snow. Persistent frost causes the surface to remain completely frozen until spring, allowing safe passage across it. A well-trodden path runs straight through the middle of the pond, leading toward the trails that guide mountain hikers into the High Tatras.

🇵🇱 Samego jeziora na zdjęciach nie zobaczycie. Późną jesienią Czarny Staw zamienia się w ogromne lodowisko przykryte warstwą śniegu. Panujące tu mrozy sprawiają, że aż do wiosny tafla jeziora pozostaje całkowicie zamarznięta, umożliwiając bezpieczne poruszanie się po jej powierzchni. Przez środek stawu biegnie wydeptana ścieżka, prowadząca w kierunku szlaków wiodących w Tatry Wysokie.

🇬🇧 The monumental peaks surrounding the lake look both majestic and intimidating in winter. Draped in a thick blanket of snow, they command deep respect. Standing there, I alternated between looking through the camera viewfinder and binoculars — searching for interesting structures in the landscape, but also spotting tiny moving dots on the slopes: mountain hikers making their way into the High Tatras.

One day, I would like to climb these peaks in winter myself. I believe it’s a matter of overcoming personal limits, proper preparation, and strong motivation. Some of these summits, under the right conditions, might even be achievable safely.

🇵🇱 Monumentalne szczyty otaczające jezioro wyglądają zimą niezwykle groźnie i majestatycznie. Pokryte śnieżną kołdrą budzą ogromny respekt. Stojąc w tym miejscu, na przemian spoglądałem w wizjer aparatu i przez lornetkę, szukając interesujących struktur w krajobrazie, ale także wypatrując drobnych punktów powoli przemieszczających się po zboczach – górskich wędrowców zdobywających Tatry Wysokie.

Chciałbym kiedyś zdobywać te szczyty zimą. Myślę, że to kwestia przełamania własnych barier, odpowiedniego przygotowania i motywacji. Część z nich, przy sprzyjających warunkach, być może byłbym w stanie zdobyć bezpiecznie.

🇬🇧 In certain places, you can spot snow cornices — like the one visible in the center of the frame above, emerging from behind the wall of Kościelec (the peak shown in the next photograph).

🇵🇱 W niektórych miejscach można dostrzec nawisy śnieżne – jak ten widoczny w środkowej części kadru, wyłaniający się zza ściany Kościelca (szczytu, który zobaczycie na kolejnym zdjęciu).

🇬🇧 Kościelec is one of the most recognizable and popular peaks in the Polish Tatras. It rises to 2,155 meters above sea level and towers about 550 meters above the level of Black Pond. It has been on my list of peaks to climb for quite some time, and I have a feeling that the day I decide to take on this challenge is not far away.

🇵🇱 Kościelec to jeden z najbardziej rozpoznawalnych i popularnych szczytów w polskich Tatrach. Wznosi się na wysokość 2155 m n.p.m., a od poziomu Czarnego Stawu dzieli go około 550 metrów różnicy wysokości. Od dawna znajduje się na mojej liście szczytów do zdobycia i mam przeczucie, że dzień, w którym się na to odważę, nadejdzie w niedalekiej przyszłości.

🇬🇧 In the photograph above, you can see people heading toward Karb Pass, which separates Lesser Kościelec from Greater Kościelec. This is where the final and most demanding section of the ascent begins. I really like this image and would love to be photographed in a similar way one day, when my time for this climb comes.

🇵🇱 Na powyższym zdjęciu możecie dostrzec ludzi zmierzających w stronę przełęczy Karb, oddzielającej Mały Kościelec od Dużego Kościelca. To właśnie tutaj rozpoczyna się ostatni i najtrudniejszy odcinek podejścia na szczyt. Bardzo lubię to ujęcie. Sam chciałbym kiedyś zostać sfotografowany w podobny sposób, gdy nadejdzie mój czas na tę wędrówkę.

🇬🇧 In the next photograph, we see the Granaty massif — a group of three peaks sharing a common name. The highest of them is Zadni Granat (2,240 meters above sea level). On the slope to the left, you can notice traces most likely left by avalanches. Avalanches occur regularly in the Tatras, which is why it is crucial to constantly monitor avalanche conditions and warnings. A five-level avalanche risk scale is used here, issued by TOPR (Tatra Mountain Volunteer Search and Rescue).

🇵🇱 Na kolejnym zdjęciu widzimy Granaty – grupę trzech szczytów noszących wspólną nazwę. Najwyższym z nich jest Zadni Granat (2240 m n.p.m.). Na zboczu po lewej stronie można zauważyć ślady prawdopodobnie pozostawione przez schodzące lawiny. W Tatrach zjawisko to występuje regularnie, dlatego tak ważne jest stałe monitorowanie sytuacji lawinowej i komunikatów ostrzegawczych. Obowiązuje tu pięciostopniowa skala zagrożenia lawinowego, określana przez TOPR (Tatrzańskie Ochotnicze Pogotowie Ratunkowe).

🇬🇧 Finally, a fragment of the Żółta Turnia massif, neighboring the Granaty peaks. I truly love these rocky formations emerging from beneath the snow, creating a beautiful winter mosaic.
