Last August, when we visited my wife's family, it was hazelnut season. We actually tried to time our visit around that because we wanted to help them out. I also wanted to try it since I had never picked hazelnuts before.

I'd love to say it was an exciting adventure and it was wonderful, but the first problem was having to get up very early in the village. I woke up at 5 a.m., and since I usually wake up at 9 a.m., I was very sleepy. We went down to the garden with the first rays of the sun. Did you see the hazelnut in the photo? If you've never seen a hazelnut tree before, you might think the hazelnuts on the tree are brown, but no, as you can see, the hazelnuts on the tree are green. Well, they're actually light brown, but they have a green protective layer on the outside. Just like packaging.

I saw something in the garden that I hadn't expected at all. Did you know that walnut trees are very flexible? The branches of trees several meters tall can bend all the way to the ground. You can see an example in the photo.

The trees' dry leaves were everywhere. I didn't show you this because it's photogenic, but because you need to be careful, especially if you're harvesting hazelnuts. Because there could be snakes or other harmful animals among these leaves.

Because it rains a lot in this area, there were snails everywhere in the garden. I was surprised when I first saw them on the trees, but my wife told me this was normal and knocked one off the tree. Then we continued gathering hazelnuts.

It might be a bit hard to see, but there's a spider on my leg. I don't know what kind it is, but I don't want it to crawl inside my pant leg. I don't want to turn into Spider-Man. That's exactly why we tucked our pant legs into our socks when we entered the garden. #worksafety

During my lunch break, I drank tea and had a snack while enjoying this beautiful view. You probably remember this place. I shared this view when I got engaged a year ago.

My wife's family's hazelnut orchard consists of several plots and is quite large. That's why we couldn't harvest it ourselves with just a few people. We worked with seasonal workers who came to that area. This is what part of the orchard looks like. The hazelnuts you eat every day are harvested from these trees.

After experiencing this once, I saw how difficult it is to harvest hazelnuts. You bend each tree, twist it, and gather the nuts. You have to make sure you don't leave any behind because these are the fruits of a year's labor. Throughout the year, there are many tasks to do, such as clearing the weeds and thorns under the trees and hoeing. If you don't clear the thorns, they grow longer than the tree itself because it rains a lot. I've seen thorns 5 meters long and as thick as the trees in the photos.

I should have taken a photo while picking hazelnuts, right? Otherwise, you might think I only took photos in the garden. You should wear old but sturdy clothes. Even though it's hot in summer, you should dress warmly because there are flies, bees, and other insects around. You don't want to get bitten by them. As someone who has experienced it firsthand, I must say again that picking hazelnuts is hard work!

As a bonus, I'll show you the tomatoes my wife's grandfather grew. @anggreklestari will like this because she also grows vegetables next to her house. We ate some of the ripe ones for lunch. They were very tasty. Really, vegetables you grow yourself are tastier than the ones you buy.

Güneşin ilk ışıklarıyla bahçeye indik. Fotoğraftaki fındığı gördünüz mü? Daha önce hiç fındık ağacı görmediyseniz ağaçtaki fındığın kahverengi olduğunu düşünebilirsiniz ama hayır, gördüğünüz gibi ağaçtaki fındık yeşil. Yani, aslında açık kahverengi ama dışında yeşil bir koruması var. Tıpkı ambalaj gibi.

Bahçede hiç beklemediğim çok fazla beklemediğim şey gördüm. Fındık ağaçlarının çok esnek olduğunu biliyor muydunuz? Birkaç metrelik ağaçların dalları yere kadar eğilebiliyor. Fotoğrafta bir örneğini görebilirsiniz.

Ağaçların kuruyan yaprakları her yerdeydi. Bunu size fotojenik olduğu için göstermedim dikkatli olmanız gerektiği için gösterdim, yani fındık hasat ediyorsanız. Çünkü bu yaprakların arasında yılan ya da başka zararlı hayvanlar olabiliyor.

Bu bölgeye çok fazla yağmur yağdığı için bahçenin her yerinde salyangozlar vardı. Özellikle ağaçlarda ilk gördüğümde şaşırdım ama eşim bana bunun normal olduğunu söyledi ve onlardan bir tanesini ağaçtan düşürdü. Sonra fındık toplamaya devam ettik.

Görmek biraz zor olabilir ama bacağımda bir örümcek var. Bunun türünün ne olduğunu bilmiyorum ama paçamdan içeri girmesini istemem. Örümcek adama dönüşmek istemiyorum. Tam da bu yüzden bahçeye girdiğimizde pantolonların paçasını çorapların içine soktuk. #işgüvenliği

Öğle molasında bu güzel manzaraya karşı çay içtim ve bir şeyler atıştırdım. Burayı muhtemelen hatırlıyorsunuzdur. Bir yıl önce nişanlandığımda bu manzarayı paylaşmıştım.

Eşimin ailesinin fındık tarlası birkaç parçadan oluşuyor ve oldukça büyük. Bu yüzden bunu kendimiz birkaç kişi toplayamazdık. O bölgeye gelen mevsimlik işçilerle birlikte çalıştık. Bahçenin bir kısmı böyle görünüyor. İşte her gün yediğiniz fındıklar bu ağaçlardan toplanıyor.

Bir kere bunu deneyimledikten sonra fındık toplamanın ne kadar zor olduğunu gördüm. Her ağacı eğiyorsunuz, büküyorsunuz ve topluyorsunuz. Geride bırakmadığınızdan emin olmalısınzı çünkü bunlar bir yıllık emeğin mahsülleri. Yıl içinde ağaçların altındaki otları ve dikenleri temizlemek, çapalamak gibi pek çok işlem gerekiyor. Dikenleri temizlemezseniz ağaçtan bile uzun hale geliyorlar çünkü çok yağmur yağıyor. Ben 5 metre uzunluğunda ve fotoğraflardaki ağaçların kalınlığında dikenler gördüm.

Fındık toplarken bir fotoğrafım olmalıydı değil mi? Yoksa benim bahçede sadece fotoğraf çektiğimi düşünebilirdiniz. Üzerinizde eski ama sağlam kıyafetler olmalı. Yazın sıcak olmasına rağmen kalın giyinmelisiniz çünkü sinekler, arılar ve başka böcekler etrafta oluyor. Onlar tarafından ısırılmak istemezsiniz. Bizzat deneyimleyen biri olarak tekrar söylemeliyim ki fındık toplamak zor bir şey!
