¡Me emocioné muchísimo!
English Version
August in Cuba is no joke.
It is one of those months when the heat seems to have a life of its own, and to make things even better, we also have power outages. So just imagine the combination: August, unbearable heat, and several hours without electricity. Staying at home can literally become torture.
That is why, when some friends called me a couple of weeks ago to invite me to spend the afternoon at a river near the city, I did not think twice. I was so excited! At that point, I honestly felt like I was melting, so any plan involving water was automatically a great plan.
I put on a pair of shorts, a crop top, and a white shirt to protect myself from the sun, and we headed to the river.
And then came the first surprise.
What a beautiful place!
I had never been there before and, honestly, I had no idea that you could find a place like this so close to the city. Sometimes we think we have to travel far away to disconnect and enjoy nature, when in reality, there may be beautiful places much closer than we realize.
I did not waste any time getting into the water.
Well, saying that I "got in" is putting it mildly because I practically jumped in.
Of course, I was very careful because there is one small detail: I cannot swim. So my relationship with water is basically one of love and respect. I love being in it, but I always remember that I am definitely not a mermaid.
The water was perfect for escaping the heat. After spending hours feeling like I was melting, getting into the river felt like giving my body a much-needed break.
We brought some beers to enjoy during the afternoon. We did not bring any food because everything was very spontaneous. We got the invitation, got excited, and simply went.
And, surprisingly, we did not need anything else.
We did not need a table full of food, a carefully organized plan, or hours of preparation. We just had the river, the scenery, a few beers, and good conversations.
And I think that is exactly what made it so special.
We spent the afternoon talking about all kinds of things, laughing, enjoying the water, and simply being there. For a few hours, I did not have to think about the heat in the city, the power outages, or all those little worries that normally occupy our minds.
For a few hours, it felt like the world had stopped.
Moments like this remind you that sometimes you really do not need much to have a great day.
Sometimes all we need is to leave the house, discover a new place, and spend a few hours with people we can truly be ourselves around.
For me, it was a simple, spontaneous afternoon with no big plans, but it turned into one of those moments that stays in your memory.
And now that August is still doing its thing, every time I think about that afternoon, I can only think:
When are we going back to the river?
Because I definitely found one of the best ways to survive the Cuban summer.
