On Wednesday I had a lunch that wasn’t in my plans, but ended up being one of those moments that brighten your week without you expecting it. It all started on Monday, when my coworker surprised me with an invitation: “Would you like to grab a coffee or have lunch one of these days?” I couldn’t make it that day, so we moved it to Wednesday after the clinic.

When we finished, he called his wife so she could meet us at Restaurante 1545, a place I hadn’t visited in almost eight years. This restaurant is right in the center of Holguín, in a colonial house in front of Parque de las Flores, a spot full of history. Its name refers to the year the city was founded and, even though it’s a state-owned place and people tend to think the quality might be inconsistent, I’ve always loved its colonial style. It has that Cuban charm that makes you feel like you’re eating inside a little piece of Holguín’s history.

To my surprise, we were welcomed very kindly and the atmosphere was calm. While we waited for the food, we had a couple of glasses of draft beer, cold and refreshing. I made an exception in my diet that day, but it was worth it.
We ordered rice with bacon, pork steaks (the house recommendation), a mixed salad with avocado and cucumber, and tostones. Everything looked delicious and smelled amazing. The meat was tender, flavorful, and surprisingly good. I tasted a bit of the rice — also really good — and the fresh salad went perfectly with the crispy tostones.

And well… when I saw they had rice pudding for dessert, there was no way I could resist. I ordered it without thinking twice. It was a total win: creamy, with cinnamon and that touch of lemon zest that I love. Honestly, I think it was the best rice pudding I’ve ever eaten.

Between the drinks, the food, and the conversation, we had a really lovely lunch. It made me happy to share time with my coworker and his wife in a different way, away from the hospital, although, as always, doctors end up talking about medical topics anyway. Still, we agreed to repeat moments like this more often.

Sometimes you just need to disconnect for a little while, and this lunch was exactly that: a simple, warm break with great company.
