A few days ago I experienced one of the most beautiful and funniest outings I've ever had in Gibara, and I couldn't leave it untold. I had promised my mom that we would go to the beach together, so we agreed to go to the closest one we had... which happens to be, literally, my grandmother's backyard. Yes, her yard is the very coastline, a long dogtooth strip with a few little beaches tucked in between the rocks.

We invited my younger first cousin and set off in search of the cleanest and quietest beach. But what we found was much better than that. Walking and hopping between rocks, we discovered a corner that won my heart completely: a small natural pool known as “El Hoyito”. (In case anyone reads it and wants to know the more technical name, this type of formation is called a poseta or natural pool).

The first thing I loved was that it has shade, something that is appreciated after walking in the sun. The second thing is that there are almost never people there, and third, and most importantly that day, there are no waves! Although I love swimming in the waves, that afternoon what I needed was peace, to relax and let the water embrace me without pushing me back and forth.

Going down wasn't easy -you have to be careful with the rocks and hold on tight-, but once you're in, the water reaches you at a perfect height to sit down, rest your back on the rock and just... do nothing. In addition, there is a small tunnel through which it communicates with the open sea. I was very impressed, although I was also a little scared to think that there are people diving there. I don't know if I'm claustrophobic, but the idea of going through that dark passage doesn't excite me much. Still, seeing it from the inside is an experience that leaves you speechless.

We stayed there until almost dusk, laughing, talking, floating in silence. It was a gift for the soul. One of those moments that stay with you forever.

Sometimes you don't have to travel far or spend a lot of money to find magical places. Sometimes paradise is just behind your grandmother's house.

Hace unos días viví uno de los paseos más bonitos y divertidos que he tenido en Gibara, y no podía quedarme sin contarlo. Le había prometido a mi mamá que saldríamos juntas a la playa, así que nos pusimos de acuerdo para ir a la más cercana que teníamos… que resulta ser, literalmente, el patio de mi abuela. Sí, su patio es la mismísima costa, una larga franja de diente de perro con algunas pequeñas playitas escondidas entre las rocas.

Invitamos también a mi prima hermana más pequeña y salimos en busca de la playa más limpia y tranquila. Pero lo que encontramos fue mucho mejor que eso. Caminando y brincando entre piedras, descubrimos un rincón que se ganó mi corazón por completo: una pequeña piscina natural conocida como “El Hoyito”. (Por si alguien lo lee y quiere saber el nombre más técnico, este tipo de formación se llama una poseta o poza natural).

Lo primero que me encantó fue que tiene sombra, algo que se agradece después de caminar bajo el sol. Lo segundo es que casi nunca hay personas allí, y lo tercero, y más importante ese día, ¡no hay oleaje! Aunque me encanta nadar entre las olas, esa tarde lo que necesitaba era paz, relajarme y dejar que el agua me abrazara sin empujarme de un lado a otro.

Bajar no fue fácil —hay que tener cuidado con las piedras y agarrarse bien—, pero una vez adentro, el agua te llega justo a una altura perfecta para sentarte, apoyar la espalda en la roca y simplemente… no hacer nada. Además, hay un pequeño túnel por donde se comunica con el mar abierto. Me impresionó mucho, aunque también me dio un poco de susto pensar que hay gente que bucea por ahí. No sé si soy claustrofóbica, pero la idea de meterme por ese pasadizo oscuro no me emociona mucho. Igual, verlo desde adentro es una experiencia que te deja sin palabras.

Estuvimos allí hasta casi el anochecer, riéndonos, hablando, flotando en silencio. Fue un regalo para el alma. Un momento de esos que se quedan guardados para siempre.

Y es que a veces no hace falta viajar lejos ni gastar mucho para encontrar lugares mágicos. A veces el paraíso está justo detrás de la casa de tu abuela.
