The Flavor of My Hometown: This is How the 8th Gastronomic Services Event in Ciego de Ávila, Cuba, is Experienced. [ENG] [ESP]

Today, I have the pleasure of inviting you to explore the boulevard of Ciego de Ávila and discover what the trade fairs in my province are like—from various food offerings and culinary competitions to the natural atmosphere for this type of event. This gesture of prioritizing attention to their daily situation is a visible effort by the authorities to organize and facilitate access to food during a symbolic and familiarly important time of the year, just before Cuba’s brightest January.

¡Hola viajeros de la comunidad @worldmappin!

Hoy tengo el placer de invitarlos a recorrer el boulevar avileño y conocer como son las ferias comerciales de mi provincia, desde ofertas de varios alimentos, competencias gastronómicas y ambiente natural para este tipo de eventos. Este gesto de atención prioritaria a su situación cotidiana, es un esfuerzo visible de las autoridades por ordenar y facilitar el acceso a los alimentos en un momento simbólico y familiarmente importante del año, previo al enero más luminoso de Cuba.

As you can see in the first photographs, the day began completely cloudy with scattered rain. This delayed the setup of the products for public sale a bit, leaving the boulevard looking quite deserted in the morning hours.

José Martí Park and the central street designated for the event seemed as though nothing would happen today. Everything started to improve after 9:00 a.m.

Como pueden ver en las primeras fotografías, el día comenzó totalmente nublado y con lluvias parciales. Eso atrasó un poco la colocación de los productos para la venta al público, que a simple vista se presenta con un desolado boulevar en horas de la mañana.

El parque José Martí y la calle central para el evento parecía como si no fuese a ocurrir nada el día de hoy, todo empezó a estar mejor después de las 9:00 am.

The first striking observation is an extremely long line of elderly retirees waiting to collect their pension money from the Savings Bank. This is nothing more than the social security benefit payments for years of work with the Cuban State, an amount that is utterly insignificant compared to real street prices.

La primera observación que impresiona, es una súper cola de personas jubiladas de la tercera edad en espera de cobrar en el Banco de Ahorro, su dinerito de la chequera. Que no es más que los pagos por las prestaciones del Sistema de Seguridad Social por años de trabajo con el Estado Cubano, que es una basura comparado con los precios de la calle real.

Continuing with the presentation, we can see the vendors arranging the varied products on the tables, in anticipation of the festive activities.

Also, upon arriving at the store where I work, I prepared my shelf to sell packages of dry beans, bird seeds, honey, as well as some ornamental plants to decorate the homes of the town.

Ya continuando con la presentación, se aprecian los vendedores colocando los productos variados en la mesa, vísperas de las actividades festivas.

También llegando a la tienda donde trabajo, preparé mi estante para comercializar los paquetes de granos secos y semillas para aves, miel, además de algunas plantas ornamentales para decorar los hogares del pueblo.

This area is the main venue for the 8th Gastronomic Services Gathering, located in the historic Hotel Sevilla itself—a paradigm of early 20th-century architectural eclecticism.

This is where the competitions take place for the best Cuban dishes, products, and cocktails among different gastronomic centers or restaurants. Children also participate, showcasing their culinary skills.

Esta zona, es la cedé principal del VIII Encuentro de Servicios Gastronómicos, ubicado en el mismo Hotel Sevilla, paradigma del eclecticismo arquitectónico de inicios del siglo XX.

Aquí es donde se realiza las competencias de los mejores platos de comidas, productos y coctelerías cubanas entre los distintos centros gastronómicos o restaurantes, aunque participan los niños, mostrando sus habilidades para la cocina.

In the central section, various self-employed workers, MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises), and local development projects are showcased. This creates genuine hope for finding a greater diversity of food items or goods all within the same space and timeframe.

Adding to this commercial celebration is the Ciego de Ávila television network, informing the population through its channels about the various activities taking place in the city today.

En la parte media, se expresa varios trabajadores por cuenta propia, Mipymes y proyectos de desarrollo local. Generando una esperanza real de encontrar una mayor diversidad de alimentos o artículos en un mismo espacio y tiempo.

Se suma a esta fiesta comercial, la televisión avileña informando a la población mediante sus canales, las distintas actividades que se conmemoran el día de hoy en la ciudad.

As we move forward, the atmosphere transforms. The colonial arcades with their columns offer shade and coolness, while small businesses open their doors.

This is where every service comes to life. Beneath these corridors, I tried to capture photographs of some products, like a surprise plush of the adorable Stitch and a package of peanut seeds that I bought for myself.

A medida que avanzamos, el ambiente se transforma, los portales coloniales con columnas ofrecen sombra y frescura, mientras pequeños negocios abren sus puertas.

Aquí es donde cada servicio cobra vida. Bajo estos corredores intenté hacer capturas fotográficas de algunos productos como un peluche sorpresa del adorable Stitch y un paquete de semillas de maní, que compre para mí.

Of course, Santa Claus couldn’t be missing, nor could the beautifully decorated centers for these wonderful holidays like Christmas and the festive season. Many families are waiting to go in and enjoy a rich coffee and tropical cocktails.

I can’t tell you much about this place yet, as I haven’t had the privilege of visiting it. I’ll go later to create a post dedicated to its services.

No podía faltar el señor Santa Claus y los centros adornados para estas fechas tan hermosas como la navidad y felices fiestas. Muchos familiares esperando para entrar a disfrutar de un rico café y cócteles tropicales.

No puedo comentarles mucho de este local, porque aún no he tenido el privilegio de visitarlo, luego lo haré para crear un post dedicado a sus servicios.

Upon reaching the end of the boulevard, you can see that fishing products, canned goods, citrus fruits, and beverages (including rum) are also being sold through Commerce and Gastronomy, in a "liberated yet regulated" manner. Emphasis was placed on the commitment of all economic actors to apply prices as close to cost as possible, to avoid increasing prices for the population.

Al llegar al final del boulevar, puede contemplar que se venden también productos de pesca, conservas, cítricos y bebidas (incluyendo ron) a través de Comercio y Gastronomía, de manera “liberada y controlada”. Se enfatizó la voluntad de todos los actores económicos de aplicar el precio mínimo al costo para no incrementar los precios a la población.

To conclude, the experience at this event was spectacular—the flow of people was very positive. Complete families, elderly adults, young people, and children were all seen moving calmly along, stopping at the stalls, inquiring about prices, and sampling flavors.

The walk ends with a clear impression, this boulevard is not just a physical space, but a social stage where gastronomy serves as a bridge between colonial tradition, the local economy, and community life.

Para concluir, la vivencia en este evento fue espectacular, el flujo de personas era muy bueno. Se observaban familias completas, adultos mayores, jóvenes y niños, todos avanzando con calma, deteniéndose frente a los mostradores, preguntando precios, probando sabores.

El paseo termina con una sensación clara, este boulevard no es solo un espacio físico, sino un escenario social, donde la gastronomía sirve de puente entre tradición colonial, economía local y convivencia ciudadana.
