A visit to the Sand Sculpture Exhibition in Prora / Ein Besuch in der Sandskulpturen-Ausstellung in Prora

Every year, this visit is a fixed part of my personal calendar. The Sand Sculpture Exhibition in Prora has become one of those places I simply love returning to, because no matter how often I go there, it still manages to surprise me. There is always something to discover, something to admire, and very often something that makes me smile.

This year, the theme was especially charming. The exhibition focused on old sayings, proverbs and well known expressions, all transformed into large sand sculptures. That idea alone already sounded exciting to me, but standing there in front of these works made it something completely different. Suddenly, expressions that we use in everyday life without thinking too much about them became real scenes, real characters and real little stories made of sand.

Jedes Jahr gehört dieser Besuch für mich fest dazu. Die Sandskulpturen-Ausstellung in Prora ist für mich zu einem Ort geworden, an den ich immer wieder sehr gern zurückkehre, weil sie mich jedes Mal aufs Neue überraschen kann. Es gibt immer etwas zu entdecken, etwas zu bestaunen und sehr oft auch etwas, das mir ein Lächeln ins Gesicht zaubert.

In diesem Jahr war das Thema besonders reizvoll. Im Mittelpunkt standen alte Sprüche, Redewendungen und bekannte Weisheiten, die als große Sandskulpturen dargestellt wurden. Allein diese Idee fand ich schon spannend, aber direkt davorzustehen war noch einmal etwas ganz anderes. Plötzlich wurden Ausdrücke, die man im Alltag fast nebenbei benutzt, zu echten Szenen, zu Figuren und zu kleinen Geschichten aus Sand.

That is exactly what made this exhibition so special for me. These were not just beautiful sculptures. They were visual translations of language. And that is what gave many of the works their humor, but also their cleverness. You look at a sculpture, recognize the saying behind it, and in the same moment you realize how funny, absurd or surprisingly fitting that saying really is when it is taken literally.

I really enjoyed that mix of craftsmanship and wordplay. Some sculptures made me grin immediately, while others needed a second look before the meaning clicked. And that was part of the fun. It was not just walking through an exhibition. It felt more like walking through a giant world of ideas where language suddenly had shape, faces and emotion.

Genau das war für mich das Besondere an dieser Ausstellung. Es waren nicht einfach nur schöne Skulpturen. Es waren bildgewordene Redewendungen. Und genau das hat vielen Werken ihren ganz eigenen Humor gegeben, aber auch ihre Raffinesse. Man schaut eine Skulptur an, erkennt den Spruch dahinter, und im selben Moment merkt man, wie lustig, absurd oder auch treffend so eine Redewendung eigentlich ist, wenn man sie einmal wörtlich nimmt.

Diese Mischung aus handwerklicher Kunst und Sprachspiel hat mir richtig gut gefallen. Manche Skulpturen brachten mich sofort zum Schmunzeln, andere musste ich erst einen Moment länger anschauen, bis der Sinn vollständig bei mir ankam. Genau das machte aber auch den Reiz aus. Es war nicht einfach nur ein Rundgang durch eine Ausstellung. Es fühlte sich eher an wie ein Spaziergang durch eine riesige Gedankenwelt, in der Sprache plötzlich Form, Gesichter und Gefühle bekam.

Some motifs were especially memorable to me. “Making a thunderclap out of a fart” was one of those sculptures that instantly caught my eye. It was bold, direct, a little cheeky, and impossible to ignore. But that is exactly why it worked so well. It showed how playful this year’s theme was allowed to be.

The same goes for the sculpture about the elephant in the china shop and the saying about caution being the mother of the porcelain box. I found that combination especially brilliant, because it brought two expressions together in one visual idea. That is the moment when you realize how much imagination and planning must go into works like these.

I also liked the more playful motifs such as “Arschkarte” or “Aus die Maus”. These expressions are so common in everyday speech, yet seeing them transformed into sand gave them fresh energy. They suddenly felt new again, even though they are old sayings most of us have heard countless times before.

Einige Motive sind mir besonders im Gedächtnis geblieben. „Aus einem Furz einen Donnerschlag machen“ war so eine Skulptur, die sofort ins Auge sprang. Direkt, frech, ein bisschen provokant und genau deshalb unmöglich zu übersehen. Gerade dadurch hat sie für mich so gut funktioniert. Sie zeigte, dass das diesjährige Thema auch verspielt und augenzwinkernd sein durfte.

Genauso stark fand ich die Umsetzung von „Wie ein Elefant im Porzellanladen“ zusammen mit „Vorsicht ist die Mutter der Porzellankiste“. Diese Kombination war für mich besonders gelungen, weil dort gleich zwei bekannte Redewendungen in einer Szene zusammengeführt wurden. Genau in solchen Momenten merkt man, wie viel Einfallsreichtum und Planung in solchen Werken stecken muss.

Auch die eher spielerischen Motive wie die „Arschkarte“ oder „Aus die Maus“ haben mir gefallen. Diese Ausdrücke kennt man aus dem Alltag, und trotzdem wirkten sie als Sandskulptur plötzlich wieder frisch und neu. Obwohl man diese Sprüche schon unzählige Male gehört hat, bekamen sie durch die Umsetzung eine ganz andere Wirkung.

More than just a tradition / Mehr als nur eine Tradition

For me, visiting this exhibition every year has become much more than a simple outing. It has turned into a small tradition that I truly appreciate. There is something calming and inspiring about walking through these halls, taking in the details, and realizing how much work, patience and creativity is hidden in every single sculpture.

What fascinates me again and again is the fact that the material is so fragile. Sand is not marble, not bronze, not something built to last forever. And maybe that is exactly what makes it so impressive. So much effort, so much detail, so much artistic expression, all created from something that seems so temporary. That contrast gives the whole exhibition its own special magic.

Für mich ist dieser jährliche Besuch längst mehr als nur ein Ausflug geworden. Er ist zu einer kleinen Tradition geworden, die ich wirklich schätze. Es hat etwas Beruhigendes und zugleich Inspirierendes, durch diese Hallen zu gehen, die vielen Details auf sich wirken zu lassen und dabei zu begreifen, wie viel Arbeit, Geduld und Kreativität in jeder einzelnen Skulptur steckt.

Was mich immer wieder fasziniert, ist die Tatsache, wie vergänglich dieses Material eigentlich ist. Sand ist kein Marmor, keine Bronze, nichts für die Ewigkeit. Und vielleicht ist genau das der Punkt, der diese Kunst so beeindruckend macht. So viel Aufwand, so viele Details, so viel Ausdruck, und all das aus einem Material, das auf den ersten Blick so zerbrechlich wirkt. Gerade dieser Gegensatz verleiht der ganzen Ausstellung ihren besonderen Zauber.

A place I gladly return to / Ein Ort, an den ich gern zurückkehre

That is why I can honestly say that this visit was once again a real experience for me. Not just because the sculptures were technically impressive, but because the whole concept felt lively, creative and full of charm. It was one of those visits where you do not simply look and move on. You stop, you smile, you think, and sometimes you even laugh out loud.

And that is exactly why I know already that I will come back again. Some places manage to keep their magic, even when you know them well. For me, the Sand Sculpture Exhibition in Prora is one of those places.

Deshalb kann ich ehrlich sagen, dass auch dieser Besuch wieder ein echtes Erlebnis für mich war. Nicht nur, weil die Skulpturen handwerklich beeindruckend waren, sondern weil das ganze Konzept lebendig, kreativ und voller Charme wirkte. Es war einer dieser Besuche, bei denen man nicht einfach nur schaut und weitergeht. Man bleibt stehen, man schmunzelt, man denkt nach und manchmal muss man sogar richtig lachen.

Und genau deshalb weiß ich jetzt schon, dass ich wiederkommen werde. Manche Orte schaffen es, ihren Reiz zu behalten, selbst wenn man sie schon gut kennt. Für mich gehört die Sandskulpturen-Ausstellung in Prora ganz klar dazu.
