Our last visit to Alnwick Castle - including archery and broomstick lessons

This is just a post to recount the last day of our holiday in North East England last year.

We had been staying in the town of Alnwick all week, and had been to the castle earlier in the week (which I posted about at the time) but wanted to go back for one last look - its what the kids choose to do on their last day. We could still get access under the same tickets, so it made sense.

Its quite an impressive castle, dating back to the 11th century. It encloses quite a huge area and completely dominates the town. I think its the case that the town grew up around the castle, and not the other way round. It has beautiful Norman style architecture throughout, which makes complete sense considering it was built just after the Norman conquest.

The castle has a lot of activities, and thats the main reason the kids wanted to go back. They had a shot on the archery - and did quite well.

However, the coolest thing the castle offers is broomstick riding lessons ! The broomstick lessons scene in the Harry Potter films was filmed at this location, and hence they have capitalised on it. It was really funny to watch. There were some "professors" providing the lessons which consisted of running with the broomsticks while shouting 'wee' and 'whosh' - all good fun. It was hilarious, but our daughter (13 - an awkward age in itself) and her two cousins, who were on holiday with us, were too embarrassed to do it - which I also thought was hilarious !

There were also a number of other activities set up in the grounds as can be seen above. You could get dressed up in armour, or as a princess, and they also had small scale catapults and trebuchets and you could fire them to knock down mock castle walls - which the kids really enjoyed. It was all quite fun.

So it was great that the kids could pick what they wanted to do on the last day of their holidays - and considering the beautiful setting and weather it really was a fun day. And just writing this post has brought back lovely memories of that day !

If you are ever in the North East of England near Alnwich, I simply cant recommend it enough - and absolutely stunning town and castle - so worth the visit !

Hi Hoosie.
This is a very beautiful castle!
Is the castle haunted by any chance?

Hi, I cant remember for sure - but castles like this usually have some tale about ghosts. But while in the area we stopped in another village nearby that has one of the most haunted hotels in Britain !

That's a cool castle and it still has a lot of visitors with so much bad news coming to the Harry Potter series because of the new video game, Hogwarts Legacy.

It's fun to just think of the fun things and ignore the bad things. I'm going to visit a castle in the future. Maybe, Alnwick Castle is a good destination. Thanks for sharing~

I am not sure what Trebuchet is. It would be fun to try archery. Maybe not for the people who be around me at the time. 😀
Probably have to give me a lot of space.
Thanks again for sharing your outing, @hoosie.
Enjoy your evening.😀

Many thanks ! A trebuchet is a large catapult that was used before the invention of cannons to hurl massive stones at castles during a seige with the intention of breaking down the walls. They had a small scale one there that could hurl small bean bags at a toy wall (of decent size) that you had to try and knock down - it was really fun !!!

You're very welcome and thank you for the explanation. I am sure I have seen them and didn't know what they were called. Sounds like a fun way to vent some stress.
Enjoy your day, @hoosie😆

This is what I love about the UK, the history. Since we're a much younger country, we don't have as much of it here in the USA.

I only spent 24 hours there in Birmingham, England on my way to Germany back in 2017. So much to see and do that if I had to do it over again, I'd have allotted an entire week to go explore the place more.

That city was not what I expected. Seems like there were more people from somewhere else there and fewer native English people than I thought, a true melting pot. That must be the advantage of your isle being between the old world and the new.

In your neck of the woods, I always wondered what the thoughts were on restoring old ruins? It seems a shame to just let them melt away into the dust.
