Skin in the Ring (a decoy poem that's actually a scream)

I think we're scared of getting skin in the ring,
Kids from my generation
Supersonic space robots, mind-floaties
Pop celebrities, a dime a dozen
We're shell-shocked outta making a splash.


Scared, you say? I do. Rough hand pressed slick to my gut.
Say again, but he's the world at break-neck speed
Makes me swallow my words so I don't swallow my tongue.


What of? Wish he'd pry fingers from skin.
'Cept if he takes the hand off, I'm worried I'll detach.
I'm getting space floaties, even as belly clenched tight.

Thing I gotta remember, we're in a fantasy.
I just can't figure if it's his or mine.
Cat'n'mouse turns into snake'n'gerbil, as cosmos gapes its jaws wide.
Fingers propel me off my lonely asteroid.

Destination: nirvana and the end of known time,
& I'm no longer frightened. I'll just bounce back if my head lolls back.
I catch myself in missile shards. Old &bent.
My bones no longer work. Skin off my belly's peeling off.

I chase through the ring, but there's another girl there.
Pretty. Pretty damn young. And her ribs bare'n'compact.
Another cadaveric hand. I yell for her to look out.

And eardrum-burst, the cosmos yells back.

This is impressive and touches deeply. It reminds me that we are not "alone" as we might think we are, and that we shouldn't let fear cripple us. Because before you look we are gone and there's no coming back.
You've told a story well and captured a scene nicely.
That photo is feminine and gorgeous. I love the lighting and your posture serves its purpose, as well as your body language that depicts the story nicely 🙌

BTW, I'm listening to this song as I respond... Somehow, I think the lyrics coincide with your poem;) (a little bit.)

You saw straight through it, my friend. Not being alone, and doing something that matters before we're gone was precisely the mood. Thank you, I appreciate that! I've been playing around with photography, and wanted something skin-y for this one, so I'm glad it got the mood across.
