Am I in Earth, in Heaven, or in Hell?

avatar

Every why hath a wherefore. Am I in earth, in heaven, or in hell? Sleeping or waking, mad or well-advised? Known unto these and to myself disguised?

Sculpture has always fascinated me. It's expressive in a way painting can never quite attain, I feel.

I'm not much of a museum person. I do have some museums I simply adore, but generally, I'm not a fan of the imposed deferential hush of art places. Come to think of it, I don't like any place that forces me to behave in a certain way. Obviously, one should observe basic common sense measures in regard to the art, but other than that, I'm not keen on people giving you the stink-eye if you laugh or make a too loud comment in a museum.

I think art is sacred. I also think if my behavior influences your enjoyment of it, that you're only pretending to enjoy it.

This fantastic gallery is housed in the Convitto delle Arti in Noto, Italy. As the name hints, it is a museum inside an old Jesuit convent. The location itself is gorgeous, especially as the convent is right in the middle of Noto, a heavily Baroque town.

Right now, the convent is hosting three exhibitions, all part of a program called Baroque i Noto. The first exhibit houses various paintings by Caravaggio, van Dyck and several others.

The deeply dramatic Lacrymosa in the background certainly added to the mood, especially for someone not overly impressed by churchy paintings.

But what really hit me was the next exhibition, Italian sculptor Giuseppe Agnello's take on the complex relationship between humanity, divinity and nature.

I'm drawn to art that is grotesque, and bizarre. This man's sculpting is disturbing, and it's stuck in my head.

I guess it depends on how you see it. Nature growing inside the human body or some kind of cancer.

Terror and beauty make for an exceptional muse. Both for sculptors and photographers in this case. If you're traveling to Sicily, Noto should definitely mark a day on your calendar. Paradisical.

How's your weekend?

Fascinating sculptures! I might have never left. Wow. I will be thinking about these for a long time. Disease, dis-ease, but beautiful at the same time. hm

I love this post. Great photos, great musings.

Disease, dis-ease,

That never occurred to me, either, and I think you might be right about that 👍

Why do I feel the sculptures speak volumes about the different ailments/diseases humans go through. It's thought provoking and has made me think about a lot of things in a short time.

It's expressive in a way painting can never quite attain, I feel.

Totally relatable. There's one in my school. Each time I pass by it, I ponder on what was really in the artists mind when he or she sculpted it. I mean these sculptures have deep meanings and it takes deep thoughts to understand and get the message.

I enjoyed reading this one Honey, it's intellectually engaging<3.

These are some unique and interesting sculptures.

I'm not keen on people giving you the stink-eye if you laugh or make a too loud comment in a museum.

I thought that I was the only one who felt this way about museums. There's one in my town that I'll probably visit simply because it's a small town and there's not much to see otherwise:D

My weekend has been going good and I'm loving the sunshine:)))
