Mølen Geopark Norway's largest pebble beach

They can be pointed or dome-shaped, and their base may be round, elliptical, triangular, or elongated. A visit to Mølen Geopark reveals yet another facet of nature.
Greetings, friends, travelers, and community. Hope you all are doing well and having a good time with your loved ones.
We live near Mølen, Norway's largest pebble beach, which is part of the landscape left behind after the last Ice Age, approximately 10,000 years ago. The area is filled with countless rocks and pebbles, making it feel like a natural museum. There are more than 100 different types of rocks at Mølen. We often visit on weekends for walks and to explore the rocks. We truly appreciate this beautiful place, which also attracts many tourists. However, it is illegal to take any rocks from there, even the smallest ones. If somebody does, it is punishable by law.

Since moving to Norway, I have become more connected with nature; everything here is beautiful: the sea, mountains, fjords, rivers, waterfalls, trees, flowers, and wild forage. The beaches consist mostly of water and rocks, as they are abundant here. As most of the beaches are rocky, they change their appearance in each season.

In my first year, my husband introduced me to the beauty of Norwegian nature by taking me on a trip north. He acted as my driver and travel guide, and everything felt new to me. It took us about four days and three nights to reach the Arctic Point, making many stops along the way. The roads were quiet, with no people, houses, shops, or traffic. Only a few camping vans or cars passed us occasionally on the road. Coming from India, this was quite a shock for me. I asked my husband if there was anything to see besides water and rocks, which was my initial impression. However, I gradually fell in love with Norway’s stunning nature. I began to observe the small details of beauty all around me and developed a greater appreciation for the kindness of nature.

Today, I want to share our trip to Mølen, located in Larvik Municipality, Vestfold. Around 20 kilometers by driving and then walking to Mølen, 1 and a half kilometers. Mølen covers a total protected marine and land area of approximately 6.3 square kilometers. So you can walk however you want. But the whole area is covered with small and big pebbles.

Our original plan was to explore the forest in search of mushrooms. Unfortunately, the forest was quite dry due to a lack of rain. Nevertheless, we found patches of beautiful moss that added a lovely touch to the landscape. After a brief stroll and taking some photos, my husband drove us toward Navlunghaven, and that’s when I realized we were heading to Mølen.

It was a beautiful sunny day in the middle of summer, surrounded by lush greenery, colorful flowers, and wild berries. The area was bustling with visitors, including locals and cabin dwellers walking their dogs.

To escape the crowds, we made our way to the southwest end of Mølen, where there was a small beach filled with shells—a perfect spot for birdwatching. In the shallow water, we admired the stunning pebbles beneath the surface, as the waves danced around them, creating lovely patterns. The colorful seaweed, algae, and sea vegetation, along with the wildflowers, contributed to an enchanting summer atmosphere.

At a distance on the east end, which serves as the entrance to Mølen, people were active—children were enjoying time with their parents. The large piles of rocks looked like hills all around. Unlike burial mounds, these structures consist entirely of stone without any visible admixture of soil. It is believed that the cairns situated closest to the sea date from the Late Iron Age and the Viking Age. This is a national treasure and one of Larvik's most popular attractions.
Thank you.
