Wednesday Walk challenge : Silo N°5, Montreal (Québec)
For this Wednesday Walk Challenge, always hosted by @tattoodjay, I propose a walk through the Old Port of Montreal along Silo No. 5. This unused and huge concrete and metal structure is an integral part of the Montreal landscape. Studies have been underway for several years now to find out what to do with it. For the moment, there's no question of destroying it, but of converting it into housing, a museum with artists' studios (which makes the most sense to me)... But for the moment, the Silo is slowly deteriorating... It's a pity, because it's part of the city's industrial heritage.
Grain Silo no. 5 is located at the end of de la Commune Street in Montreal's Old Port, just inside the lock that marks the entrance to the Lachine Canal, which links the Old Port to Lake St. Louis 13 kilometers away. All around is a beautiful park with a number of paths for strolling. It was designed for the Wednesday Walk Challenge 😀.

Here's the entrance to the Lahcine Lachine, with the huge Silo structure in the background. And if you turn around, you can see the Grand Quai's “Tetris” tower (presented during the Wednesday Walk challenge: Grand Quai, Montreal (Québec)). And on the right, behind the bridge, you can see the Bota Bota spa, with people enjoying the jacuzzi overlooking the city.
The Maison des Éclusiers marks the entrance to the lock, which is still in operation, especially for pleasure boats. The square is home to a farmers' market on certain days of the week, and in the building is the restaurant le Marché des Éclusiers. There's often an ice-cream stand and street food trucks. It's perfect for a refreshing walk in summer.
And here's what announces the Farmers' Market which is held on spring and summer. I couldn't figure out exactly which day of the week, but since I'm not from the neighborhood, I'm less interested 😀.
Tugboat / Remorqueur Daniel McAllister
Passing the Lockkeepers' House as you continue along the quay, you can admire the grandeur of Silo n°5, built in 1903 and in operation until 1994. It was used to sort and store grain from Western Canada, either by ship or train. The rails run directly into the Silo. You can visit this site to see the history and operation of this structure patrimoine-culturel.gouv.qc.ca, only in French). A few years ago, I visited the interior, which was really interesting...
On the wharf, the Daniel McAllister is moored. This old tugboat is the largest preserved in Canada, and the 2nd largest in the world. It was launched in 1907 in the Great Lakes region. It wasn't until the 60's that he came to Montreal to guide Canadian Pacific liners. He retired in 1980, and in recent years has been preserved by the Musée Maritime du Vieux Port. Too bad we can't visit it...
This concludes my walk along the silo in the Old Port, a reminder of the industrial past of this part of Montreal. I hope you enjoyed this Wednesday Walk challenge with me... Have a nice day!

Cool #wednesdaywalk. I worked at a grain elevator (US term for silos like these) when I was in college. Every summer. It was a great job. Come home from college. Work really long hours until harvest over around July 4th. Then have a little time off before next term. The elevator I worked at was a tiny one compared to this giant facility at the port. We unloaded trucks and loaded on to railcars (or other trucks lol).
I imagine it must be physical work to work in this kind of place (thanks for the vocabulary, grain elevator but I prefer Silo like the SF book 😀)... no need to go to the gym after work at least.
Have a great Thursday
