Wednesday Walk challenge : Parc Jeanne Mance (Montreal)

For this Wednesday Walk, I propose a walk in Montreal's Jeanne Mance Park. This park is located in the Le Plateau neighborhood at the foot of Mont-Royal. You can see the cross at the top on the first photo 🔽. Even during the Quebec winter, it's a great place to take a stroll or do some sport, as you'll discover in this post. Get ready to explore one of Montreal's most charming parks 😊

Bonne balade! 😊

First, a map of the parc Jeanne Mance in the heart of Montreal's Plateau.

🗺️ Position on OpenStreetMap

Our walk through the park begins on rue Duluth, which leads to avenue de l'Esplanade. On one side, there's a row of houses with a superb view of the park and Mont Royal. The price must be quite high, given the privileged location on the park, nature in the heart of the city.

I like the architectural ornaments on the roof and the double-arched window on the top floor.

The history of Jeanne Mance Park began at the end of the 19th century with the city's purchase of land from Mont-Royal to avenue Esplanade. When it was created, it was called Fletcher’s Field, but Montrealers soon dubbed it Jeanne Mance park in honour of the city's co-founder. The name became official in 1990.

The park offers a fine view of downtown, including the new tower in the Place des Arts district, seen in the center of the photo.

In the park, there are some beautiful trees, including this one that looks like a 3-fingered hand.

Monument George-Etienne Cartier

DSC04755.JPG

From Parc Jeanne Mance, we can see the George-Etienne Cartier monument which was created in 1919 by sculptor George William Hill as a tribute to George-Etienne Cartier. He was an influential Canadian politician, especially in the 1850s-1870s, and founder of Confederation (source: Wikipedia).

I'll tell you more about this monument in a future Wednesday Walk, as I stayed in Parc Jeanne Mance without crossing Avenue du Parc.

With the cold, the paths were icy, reflecting the morning sunlight. Perfect for taking photos. Because of the freezing and thawing, the broken ice gave beautiful structures off the paths like this mini mountain 🔽. Nature really is a talented artist 😀.

Sport

DSC04759.JPG

But the main advantage of Jeanne Mance Park is that you can enjoy sports in both summer and winter. There's a cross-country ski trail all around the park. And for hockey fans, there's a field for a game and a skating rink, which was being maintained by a tractor when I visited. Keep active even in winter.

StreetArt

DSC04774.JPG

I left the park via Rue Rachel, where I spotted this work of art. You know me... I couldn't resist taking a few photos of StreetArt. Unfortunately, the wall was already crossed. I'm not sure about the artist, it looks like MSHL. However, there's no doubt about the smiley at the top of the building, it's MakeNoize.

In conclusion, the Jeanne-Mance Park is a truly magnificent park, especially for local residents, who can enjoy sports and a breath of fresh air all year round. But it's also a great place for tourists to visit and admire the beauty of Montreal. Thanks for following me on this walk and see you soon for another Wednesday Walk challenge. Have a beautiful day.

Looks like a great park for any season indeed.
Great captures.
The paths look very slippery ❄️❄️☃️☃️

Great park for local residents for doing sport also in summer : volleyball, soccer, soccer, tennis and jogging...
No so slippery, it was "shiny", but the layer of ice was thin, so it broke easily when walking.
Have a wonderful day
