Wednesday Walk : Snowy Roy Street, Montreal

For this #WednesdayWalk hosted by @tattoodjay, I'm taking you on a winter walk along Roy Street in Montreal. This weekend, it wasn't too cold, perfect for walking and admiring the snowflakes. They got bigger and bigger as I walked, as you'll see in my photos. So beautiful...

The photos are in chronological order. We start at the corner of Berri and Roy streets with these old houses. You can see that the soil is clay, and that affects the foundations. Nothing is straight anymore after all these years* 😀.

Today we are on Roy Street in the Plateau Mont-Royal neighborhood of Montreal. The return trip is almost along the same street but via an alley and then Laval Street, a very beautiful street with trees and lovely houses.

It had snowed heavily overnight. A good fifteen centimeters already covered the streets of Montreal. That didn't stop anyone from going out and enjoying the city. Just make sure you're well dressed and have good winter shoes.

I really like this row of houses on Berri Street, the same architecture but with different colors. It's especially striking when the sky is gray and the sidewalks are white. The cold has definitely settled over Montreal, as you can see from the icicles hanging from the roof of this yellow house.

On Roy Street, there's this house on the corner of Laval Street. I love its architecture, with its brick walls, but especially the semicircular window moldings. On the ground floor, there's a pottery studio, Studio Acacia. In the summer, the windows are open, and you can see the artists at work.

Terrasses Roy

A few years ago, Roy Street was closed to traffic. A park, the Terrasses Roy, was created at the intersection with Bullion Street. In the summer, several large planters house a vegetable garden where people can pick their own produce. Tables and chairs have also been set up, perfect for enjoying the dishes offered by the nearby restaurants.

Furthermore, to my great delight, there's Street Art everywhere. On the wall of Santropol, a community organization, Style Over Status created this beautiful portrait. In addition, this fall the front wall received a new mural, which I'll be showcasing soon in my #StreetArt series. You can see it in the first photo on Terrasses Roy.

Art Gang

Upon arriving on Saint-Laurent Boulevard, the street art doesn't stop. There's the ArtGang shop, as well as the entrance to Graffiti Alley (on the left). Another essential Montreal feature is the famous orange cones surrounding the numerous construction sites around the city. There are as many orange cones as there are residents on the Island of Montreal. I'm joking, but that's probably not far from the truth 😅.

The snowflakes were getting bigger and bigger; it was really nice to walk in these conditions. As I was saying, street art is everywhere in this neighborhood, especially thanks to the Mural Festival which has been held annually for about ten years. Artists from all over the world have left their works on almost every wall, like here with Rone, or Montreal artist Kevin Ledo paying tribute to Leonard Cohen.

We're ending our walk on Laval Street, a very pretty street thanks to the trees lining the sidewalk. I hope you enjoyed discovering Roy Street with me.
Have a great #WednesdayWalk!

When the snow is still white, the city is truly beautiful. But unfortunately, it doesn't last; it quickly turns greyish-brown.
Thanks for the support.

Never been to Montreal, but heard great stories about this city. Now I see how beautiful some of the architecture is. Love the houses and buildings in your photographs. And such an amount of street art, more or less untouched by spraypaint signs (well, some do have them, but mostly I see beautiful 'paintings').

A few days only?
I think I can stay longer, since I like to just hang out and stroll.
Perhaps this will happen one day. Nothing planned yet, but somewhere on my list for quite some time already.

Been to Vancouver a few times for a few months in a row, for work, but had plenty of time to njoy as well. Not so much a beautiful city, but very pleasant to hang out, and the surrounding nature is fantastic. Even skied on the nearest mountain, Cirrus hill or something, 15 minutes or so from downtown. That is amazing to me. Skiing and 'beach' at 15 minutes distance, wow.

I think a few days are enough for Montreal; it's less historically significant than European cities, for example. But it can serve as a base for exploring the rest of Quebec.

I've never been to Vancouver; it's also on my list, but like you, it's not scheduled yet. Whistler is also nearby, a large ski resort...

Have a great Friday, weekend is coming.

Thanks, will make a mental note of this. And yes, rest of Quebec is to be explored as well.

Whistler: visited it one or two times. Didnt ski there though, one time it was closed, the other time I didn't had the time.
Been to APEX Mountain Resort, though. A few hours' drive to the east of Vancouver. Small village but plenty of ski slopes, mostly black, single and double diamond. Loved it. Whirlpool outside, and the snow to cool down and get the massive tingling body when jumping back into it.

NJOY the weekend 🙏
