Wednesday Walk : Snow and Art at Parc La Fontaine, Montreal

For this #WednesdayWalk organized by @tattoodjay, I'm taking you on another stroll through Parc La Fontaine in Montreal, a large green space enjoyed by Montrealers throughout the year. The first snow has fallen in the city. It's always exciting when everything turns white. Of course, by the end of March, I'll be longing to see green grass and blue skies! 😀 But in the meantime, we need to make the most of winter, especially since the park also offers some artistic and sporting surprises.

Pour ce #WednesdayWalk organisé par @tattoodjay, je vous propose une nouvelle balade au Parc La Fontaine à Montréal, un grand espace vert apprécié des Montréalais tout au long de l'année. La première neige est tombée en ville. C'est toujours excitant quand tout devient blanc. Bien sûr qu'à la fin mars, je vais vouloir voir de l'herbe verte et un ciel bleu ! 😀 Mais en attendant, il faut savoir profiter de l'hiver d'autant plus que le parc offre aussi quelques surprises artistiques et sportives.

The walk took place in Parc La Fontaine, one of Montreal's major parks. I already talked about the history and design of this park in one of my first #WednesdayWalk posts, which you can read at Wednesday Walk challenge : Parc Lafontaine (Montreal). The red line represents my walk through Parc La Fontaine from Duluth Street to Rachel Street.

La balade était dans le Parc La Fontaine, un des grands parcs de Montréal. J'ai déjà parlé de l'histoire et de la conception de ce parc dans un de mes premiers #WednesdayWalk, à lire sur Wednesday Walk challenge : Parc Lafontaine (Montreal). La ligne rouge représente ma traversée du Parc La Fontaine de la rue Duluth vers la rue Rachel.

To get to Parc La Fontaine, I often take Duluth Street, an "almost pedestrian" street filled with restaurants including Jardin de Panos. It's a popular Greek restaurant where you can bring your own wine. The food is comforting—a taste of Greece with your feet in the snow 😀.

Pour aller au Parc La Fontaine, je passe souvent par la rue Duluth, rue "presque pietonnière" remplie de restaurants dont le Jardin de Panos. Il s'agit d'un restaurant grecque où on peut apporter votre vin assez populaire. La nourriture y est réconfortante, un bout de Grêce les pieds dans la neige.

There are still some brave souls jogging along the park's paths. It's not easy, because early in the morning, as in these photos, the ground is still quite icy. And in the afternoon, everything turns to slush. Given these conditions, my motivation prefers to stay warm and read a book 😀.

Il y a encore des courageux qui font leur jogging le long des allées du Parc. Ce n'est pas évident, car tôt le matin comme sur ces photos, le sol est encore pas mal glacé. Et dans l'après-midi, tout se transforme en boue. Avec ces éléments, ma motivation préfère rester au chaud à lire un livre 😀.

Here's Théâtre de Verdure, which often hosts free shows in the summer. This past summer, I went to see Dominique Fils-Aimé, a soul singer from Montreal—really wonderful in this open-air theater, especially on beautiful days. Crossing the artificial lake, you reach the more sports-oriented part of the park. The beach volleyball and "pétanque" courts give way to an ice skating rink.

Voici le Théâtre de Verdure qui accueille souvent l'été des spectacles gratuits. Cet été, je suis allé voir Dominique Fils-Aimé, chanteuse soul de Montréal, vraiment sympa dans ce théâtre ouvert surtout aux beaux jours. En traversant le lac artificiel, on arrive dans la partie plus sportive du Parc. Les terrains de beach volley et pétanque laissent leur place à une patinoire.

Mémoire au pied des géants

This past summer, six century-old Carolina poplars surrounding the soccer field were cut down because they were affected by "internal decay, a fungal disease that compromises the structural integrity of the trees" (source: Le Devoir, in French only). It's really unfortunate because they were magnificent with enormous trunks. Fortunately, a few remain.

Cet été, six peupliers de Caroline centenaires, entourant le terrain de football, ont été coupés car ils étaient atteint "d'une carie interne, une maladie fongique qui compromet la solidité des arbres" (source : Le Devoir). C'est vraiment dommage car ils étaient magnifiques avec des troncs énormes. Heureusement il en reste quelqu'uns.

What I find wonderful is this artistic initiative. On a cut trunk, artist Lucas Besse-Dicaire carved these three alcoves with a chainsaw, presenting Mémoire au pied des géants (Memory at the Feet of Giants). I wasn't familiar with this artist who decided to live deep in the forest with his Terre Sauvage project. It's a beautiful tribute to these trees that stood for years in the heart of Montreal. They must have witnessed so many things at their feet.

Ce que je trouve bien c'est cette initiative artistique. Sur un tronc coupé, l'artiste Lucas Besse-Dicaire a sculpté à la scie à chaîne ces trois alcôves présentant Mémoire au pied des géants. Je ne connaissais pas cet artiste qui a décide de vivre en pleine forêt avec son projet Terre Sauvage. C'est un bel hommage à ces arbres qui ont traversé les années au coeur de Montréal. Ils ont dû en voir passer des choses à leur pied.

We exit Parc La Fontaine at the corner of Rachel Street and Papineau Avenue with the Church of the Immaculate Conception. I hope you enjoyed this stroll through Parc La Fontaine in my company. You got to see everything this park has to offer, even in winter.
