Let's go with the history and evolution of the cactus.
Cacti are the most famous family of succulent plants and one of the most popular in general, mainly due to their appearance in countless movies and cartoons. Native to the American continent, cacti are classified in more than 200 genera that include some 2,500 species, adapted to the most arid climates.

The smallest cacti measure barely one centimeter, while the largest reach 18 meters.
The scientific name of this family is "cactaceae" and the exact word that defines it in Spanish is cactáceas, although its popular name is cactus (or cactus). Scientists estimate that the origin of cacti dates back 30 to 40 million years, after the separation of the continents. Therefore, this family is endemic to the Americas. Its arrival to other continents has been due to the action of man, although there is also the hypothesis that it took place in the form of seeds in the digestive tract of migratory birds or plants attached to trunks that drifted across the seas.

There are many succulent or succulent plants that are not cacti but that share with these numerous characteristics in their morphology and appearance, due to the fact that the evolution of these species followed similar paths. This often causes these other plants to be considered as other types of cacti, when in fact they are not.

In addition, the variety of cacti is very wide: the smallest species do not exceed one centimeter in height, while the largest can reach up to 18 meters.

Let's go to Cactus Care
Although cacti are undemanding plants, they do require some care. They need a lot of sun to develop, but the direct action of its rays in the most rigorous part of the summer can damage them. Therefore, when growing cacti in pots, it is advisable not to leave them in the sun all the time during this time of the year.

It is advisable to water cacti once a month in winter and once a week in summer.
Regarding humidity, be careful not to overdo it, but also to provide them with enough water. These plants have an enormous capacity to store liquid in their roots, stem and leaves and, in addition, their surface is hairy, which allows them to capture moisture from the environment. It is advisable to water them once a month in winter and once a week in summer.

It is also important to ensure that they are in a soil that can provide them with the nutrients necessary for their development. It is convenient to fertilize the substrate in which they are and, after a few years, to transplant them to a larger container.

Cacti offer an added difficulty compared to many other plant species at the time of transplanting: the thorns that occupy almost the entirety of their body. One technique for this operation is to wrap them with paper to avoid punctures. A double or triple layer of newspaper generally prevents the thorns from digging into the hands and, at the same time, allows the plants to be handled with sufficient freedom and without causing damage.
