The Day Colors Faded: A Monochrome Journey to CUJAE / El día que se apagaron los colores: Un viaje monocromático a la CUJAE

Those who know me and follow my creative journey know that I usually view life through a vibrant lens, always seeking out the small colors and bright flavors that each day has to offer. But every now and then, reality asks us to strip away the distractions and look at the world through a different contrast. Today, I decided that everything is black and white.
It all started as a mission for a friend—a quick trip to Havana, specifically to the CUJAE university, to sort out an errand. Whenever I walk these streets, my phone is practically glued to my hand, ready to capture the moment. This time, however, the shadows and textures of the city demanded a monochrome perspective.
Here is the visual journal of my journey, captured from the streets to the screen of my phone:

Entering the Path (Marianao Square):
This was the very first shot of the day. As my transport passed in front of Marianao Square, I managed to snap this frame. There’s something raw about the street, the movement of the local transport, and the everyday flow captured in a split second.

The almost Forgotten Bridge:
Upon arriving at CUJAE, I noticed an overhead pedestrian bridge spanning the busy street—a safe haven designed to help students and locals bypass the heavy traffic below. Sadly, it seems rarely used; a quiet layer of accumulated trash and dried, fallen leaves covers the concrete, telling a story of neglect.

The View from Above:
Standing on top of that bridge, it is practically impossible not to aim the lens downward. From this vantage point, the passing cars and the massive mango trees completely steal the focus of the frame.

** Iron Ribs:**
Another shot captures the heavy, sturdy railings that support the bridge. In monochrome, the geometric patterns and the sheer strength of the metal take on a beautiful, industrial aesthetic.

Pillars of Expression:
Graffiti lines the iron columns holding up the structure. It’s the urban footprint of the students and youth who pass through here.

The Search for movement:
A local bus (guagua) pulls up to the stop, acting as a lifeline for daily transportation. A small crowd immediately gathers around the door, people standing and asking anxiously, "Where is this one heading?"

Whispers on the Concrete:
More graffiti, this time written directly onto the floor of the bridge. A flat surface turned into a canvas of fleeting thoughts: I love you with my soul 'cause it never dies"

Stained Glass in the Ruins:
Right in front of the university stands an abandoned building. Through a shattered window, the intricate patterns of the old stained glass still manage to look strikingly attractive, catching the light amidst the decay.

Reaching for the Sky:
A sharp, diagonal shot taken right from ground level to emphasize the imposing height of an old colonial mansion (casona).

The Destination:
Finally, the university itself. A definitive shot of CUJAE, proudly displaying its iconic main sign.

Inside the Beast:
On the way back, I took this shot from deep within the "stomach" of the crowded bus that was carrying us. The shadows and tight spaces perfectly capture the atmosphere of public transit.

Nature Resclaiming Space:
Back walking through Marianao, I stumbled upon this incredible sight—a resilient tree that has completely overtaken and wrapped itself around the remaining column of an old house.

The Final Landmark:
When I start walking, I just want to keep going and going. My footsteps eventually led me to the entrance of the La Lisa bridge, capturing its classic sign as the final milestone of the day.

Once this last shot was saved on my phone, I finally headed home. Sitting down in front of my screen, I got to relive every detail, making a few fine adjustments to give life to this new creation.

Quienes me conocen y siguen mi camino creativo saben que suelo ver la vida a través de un lente vibrante, buscando siempre los pequeños colores y sabores brillantes que cada día tiene para ofrecer. Pero de vez en cuando, la realidad nos pide despojarnos de las distracciones y mirar el mundo a través de un contraste diferente. Hoy, decidí que todo es blanco y negro.
Todo comenzó como una misión para un amigo: un viaje rápido a La Habana, específicamente a la universidad de la CUJAE, para resolver un asunto pendiente. Siempre que camino por estas calles, mi teléfono está prácticamente pegado a mi mano, listo para capturar el momento. Esta vez, sin embargo, las sombras y texturas de la ciudad exigían una perspectiva monocromática.

Aquí está el diario visual de mi andar, capturado desde las calles hasta la pantalla de mi teléfono:

Entrando en camino (Plaza de Marianao):
Esta fue la primera foto del día. Mientras mi transporte pasaba frente a la Plaza de Marianao, logré capturar este encuadre. Hay algo muy crudo en la calle, el movimiento del transporte local y el flujo cotidiano atrapado en una fracción de segundo.

El puente olvidado:
Al llegar a la CUJAE, me di cuenta de la existencia de un puente peatonal que cruza sobre la calle, un espacio seguro diseñado para que los estudiantes y peatones eviten el peligroso tráfico de abajo. Al parecer no se usa mucho; una capa silenciosa de basura acumulada y hojas secas caídas de los árboles cubre el concreto, contando una historia de abandono.

La vista desde las alturas:
Estando arriba en ese puente, es casi imposible no apuntar el lente hacia abajo. Desde esta perspectiva, los carros que pasan y las enormes matas de mango se roban por completo el enfoque del encuadre.

Costillas de hierro:
Otra toma captura las fuertes barandas que sostienen el puente. En monocromo, los patrones geométricos y la pura fuerza del metal adquieren una estética industrial hermosa.

Columnas de expresión:
Los grafitis decoran las columnas de hierro que sostienen la estructura. Es la huella urbana de los jóvenes y estudiantes que pasan por aquí.

La búsqueda del movimiento:
Una guagua hace parada para ayudar con la transportación diaria. De inmediato se junta un pequeño grupo de gente parada, preguntando con ansias: ¿Pa’ dónde va chofe?

Susurros en el concreto:
Más escritura en graffiti, esta vez plasmada directamente en el piso del puente. Una superficie plana convertida en lienzo de pensamientos pasajeros: "Te amo con el alma porque el alma nunca muere"

Vitrales en la ruina:
Justo frente a la universidad se alza un edificio abandonado. A través de una ventana rota, los detalles de los viejos vitrales aún se ven atractivos, capturando la luz en medio de la decadencia.

Rozando el cielo:
Una foto en diagonal tomada desde el mismísimo suelo para resaltar y lucir la imponente altura de una vieja casona.

El destino:
Por fin, la universidad en sí. Una foto definitiva de la CUJAE luciendo su emblemático letrero principal.

En el estómago de la bestia:
De regreso, tomé esta foto desde lo profundo del "estómago" de la guagua que nos transportaba. Las sombras y el espacio apretado capturan a la perfección la atmósfera del transporte público.

La naturaleza reclamando lo suyo:
Ya caminando de nuevo por Marianao, me encontré con esta joya: un árbol resiliente que se ha apoderado por completo de una de las columnas que queda en pie de una casa.

El último límite:
Cuando decido caminar, solo quiero seguir y seguir. Mis pasos me llevaron finalmente hasta la entrada del puente de La Lisa, retratando su clásico letrero como el cierre de mi viaje.

A partir de ahí, ya todo quedó guardado en mi teléfono. Regresé a casa para volver a vivir los detalles desde mi pantalla y hacer algunos ajustes a mi nueva creación.
