Three Photos of Algae on a lake

Welcome to Waimangu Volcanic Valley just outside of Rotorua in the North Island of New Zealand. This is a amazing valley walk (and boat ride at the end) of a valley which was created by the catastrophic 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera, that's right 1886, it's recent enough that there is a photos of the before and after. which destroyed the Pink and White Terraces (a whole other story) and created a unique geothermal landscape. It is the world’s youngest hydrothermal system

Over the next few weeks I'll show you quite a lot of this valley, which is Maori controlled land and therefore you will need to pay and entrance fee, but it is also unlike anything else you are likely to see in the world. It's sort of like Jurassic park came to life, there is steam everywhere and everything is so green.

Including the waterways, the lakes, and there are a few as you would imagine and full of nutrient rich water and algae grows in them, so they are more green than they are blue.
