A visit to Chinatown 🇨🇳

avatar

China town is a home away from home for Chinese living in Nigeria, although Nigerians also rent shops there. The Chinese we have there are much more than Nigerians. They speak their language and also speak English. They don't dress like the Chinese I see in movies but they sure look like them. Maybe the weather here doesn't favour their mode of dressing.

My friend’s mum is one of those with a shop there. For those familiar with the streets of Lagos, Taiwo street, Ojota will be a known place for them, this is where china town is situated. The magnificent entrance shines bright with its beautiful colour. We have various stalls and warehouses there.

It’s the rainy season here in Nigeria so I wasn’t lucky to see everything I’d love to see. So many people were indoors, moreover, I feel shy taking pictures of people and places while everyone looks. I might have to ask ate Jane and Cocola for some tips.

The Chinese seem to like the colour Red and pink a lot. Their restaurants and malls are painted this colour. Talking about restaurants, they sell their local dish in these restaurants, I didn’t try any because I wasn’t in the mood to try something new but when I go for their new year celebration, I’ll surely try some out.

They have a playground for kids and adults. They gather here in the evening to talk and share ideas. According to my friend, they are friendly and always happy to teach people their language.

My friend Esther said to me that if one can speak their language they will welcome you like one of theirs regardless of your colour or country and when you buy things from their stores they will sell to you at a discounted price. She also talked about their new year celebration, it isn’t the same as ours but they celebrate it big.
Their culture is displayed when celebrating, they share their food with anyone willing to have a taste, their dress in their native attires and sing their songs, lot of firecrackers and they design the streets with colour red. It's always a grand celebration.

I left early to beat the traffic, but I’ll be back there soon for their New year celebration. This year's was around February, I don't know the date for the next yet but I'll surely be there and It’s better I start learning chinese now.

Thanks for Reading! ❤ 💙🇨🇳

That's too different from other China towns... I was expecting more pavilion and temple-like architecture in that town 🤣 . I guess it differs from country to country. ..china town in the Philippines is better.

You're right, after posting the link on twitter someone shared pictures of the china town in his country and it's far different. The buildings there look like the Ancient Chinese buildings I see in movies unlike the normal building we have in our Chinatown.

Haaa! I never knew there's something like this but in Nigeria. That's wonderful of Lagosians to have given them a portion of the state as residence

I didn’t know before too until 2017 when my coursemate whose Mum sells goods there told me. It's a nice way of embracing other people's culture.
