Ema z Ostravy - bez kyslíkového přístroje i plynové masky EN: Ema – the Hot-Hearted Hill of Ostrava
Kopec má velmi horké nitro, teplota zde přesahuje 1000°C a dochází uvnitř k metamorfóze hornin.
EN: Once, Ostrava proudly bore nicknames like the Steel Heart of the Republic or simply Black Ostrava, titles born from the depths of its coal mines and the roar of its steelworks. Those days have faded. Heavy industry has fallen silent, and today green trees rise where smokestacks once stood. Yet the city’s past is etched into its streets and skyline — the legacy of coal mining and steel production lingers at almost every step. Among the silent witnesses to this history stands the Ema heap, watching over Ostrava like a quiet monument to its industrial soul.
It was this very monument that drew me in. After finishing my school duties, I felt the urge to finally do something I had been planning for a long time — to climb the highest peak in Ostrava, the Ema heap, which rises to 324 meters above sea level. It is located in Slezská Ostrava, near the former Petr Bezruč and Michálka mines. This tallest Ostrava hill was created by human activity — by piling up mining waste during coal extraction.
The hill has an extremely hot core, with temperatures exceeding 1,000°C, causing metamorphosis of the rocks inside. There are also vents on the hill that release dangerous gases, one of which lies directly on the path just below the summit.
There are two routes to the highest point. If you follow the marked yellow trail, you can enjoy a pleasant walk through the forest. However, there is also a direct, steep path covered with stones, which, in contrast, offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.
EN: An elevation of 324 meters above sea level may not sound breathtaking, but from the Ostravice River you still have to climb 120 meters. And since it was a scorching tropical day, I certainly worked up a sweat. A pleasant walk up Ema can also be enjoyed in autumn or winter, when the spots with vents are more visible. I plan for yesterday’s hike to the heap not to be my last.
