Wednesday walk, Hellevoetsluis
Wednesday walk around the the fortified town of Hellevoetsluis. This town started got the first permanent people living there around the year 800 bc. They were farmers who held livestock.
During the Roman empire they also had a significant amount of agriculture here.
In the history books the town name is first mentioned in the 13th century because they were starting to build dikes and locks to keep the water out of the town.
But the real boost that this area got was around 1665 when the government started to build the fortification after the second English war. And that fortification still exists today. And I took a walk around that place.
The fortification is completely cut of with a moat and there are several bridges were pedestrians can walk over to enjoy the area.
View on the water tower and the church.
This is the bombproof gunpowder magazine and it has been completely restored. Now there is a music practice room in it.
It's so green around here.
During the second world war this fortification was used by the German occupation army. It was part of the Atlantic wall defensive line
In the old day's they had a view over the water of the Grevelingen lake but today this is what you see from there. This is the testing location of the company Heesen yachts A dutch super yachts builder. take a look at there site. it's stunning what they are building there.
It is a popular walking area here.
They are continuesly restoring parts of the fortification. Restorations are probelby never done with an old building like this.
