Hiking the North coast of Spain! Looking for Vultures!
When I arrived at my first camper spot I met a Dutch couple who also spent there first two day's in Spain at this camper spot! They told me that it was a nice location to do some hiking! And he told me something that I needed to see there!
They had discover a dead horse laying in the field and vultures were feeding on it! And my first hiking trip was settled! I was going on a "vulture hunt"!
They didn't know the exact location but they could point me out in a direction! With the words, somewhere over there behind those trees, I went off!
I walked for 5 minutes and suddenly I saw a cow in the field across me! I pointed my camera and to my surprise I saw my first vulture!
To my second serpice, 5 seconds later, I already rived at the dead horse location! And all the vultures flew away...
It's so funny to see how people look at distance differently! The dead horse was in front of the first tree line! Later On they told me that they had walked a different rout then me! And that's why the interpreted it differently!
All the birds landed at the same spot across the field were the other bird was! I think that was the lookout post, and the one sitting there warned the other birds that I was coming for them!
I found a nice hiding place where I could spot the dead horse and be out of sight of the birds! But after hiding for one hour, I didn't think that they would come any more! I was sitting down wind, maybe they could smell me? I didn't smell the horse because of that, so that was good :p
I decided to continue walking and return just before sunset! Hopefully they were busy with their supper by then.
It was a big drop towards the ocean and I didn't want to go there! Because I didn't want to walk all the way up again! The landscape was beautiful, and the view over the ocean is stunning!
It was a pretty warm walk! Even for the time of year! It was about 15 degrees Celsius but the sun was burning pretty hard! I am not used to this conditions!
During my walk I continuously saw the vultures fly around me! Maybe they thought that i was an untrained hiker who could be a nice next meal? Or they wanted to be sure that I was going away!
I took a route inbetween the trees! The route was well marked and there were signs and markings everywhere. Sometimes no idea what it was or what it was for!
The vultures have nothing to complain here! I don't know how it works here in Spain, but it's a possibility that farmers deliberately put their dead animals on the field for the vultures. This to keep them away from their cattle and newly born's. I have seen the same thing in Peru, where dead goats were laid out for the condors to eat! Also to protect their young cattle! Because this beast can easily attack a young animal!
Finally I saw my van again in the distance! I think I deserved a cold beer! But stilt it was a 15 minutes walk to get there!
The last view of the trail was an animal shelter! Probably for the sheep that were walking there, and I now realize, I have no pictures of! What a good travel photographer/writer I am! 😂
Thank you so much for reading and up-voting my contend! And I really am curious what you think of my righting? This barbecue English is not my native language!
