Light Painting Refractography

As Summer is in full swing and we have nice daylight until 11:30 pm. Not exactly convenient for complex Light Painting. Yes I keep complaining. Anyhow I did cover my windows with all the blinds i had and started playing on my dinning table. After dinner the wine glass and oops my camera was left behind.

Lets have a closer look at it. I took off the lens and placed a flashlight at the end of the table. Look what happened. Here i share many different results of my Refractory Session.

Der Sommer läuft auf Hochtouren und es bleibt bis 23:30 Uhr hell – nicht gerade ideal für komplexes Light Painting. Ja, ich weiß, ich mecker hier ständig über den Sommer. Egal, ich hab einfach alle Fenster verdunkelt und hab auf dem Esstisch losgelegt.

Nach dem Abendessen stand da also noch ein Weinglas rum – und ups, meine Kamera auch noch. Na dann, schauen wir mal genauer hin. Ich hab das Objektiv abgenommen und am anderen Ende vom Tisch eine Taschenlampe platziert. Und schaut euch mal an, was da passiert ist. Hier zeig ich euch ein paar Ergebnisse aus meiner kleinen Refractory Session.

Set up

Pardon my mess. Since it wasn't exactly a planned session the table ended up being a mess. But hey working creatively you provide the brain with a space with little constrains. Drop perfection allow for things to evolve.

For that I love Refractography. It provides you with a lot of instant gratification. One cool thing to see and photograph after another. Its just so fast and rewarding.

As a german its cool to feel so productive. 🥳

Sorry für das Chaos – war ja keine geplante Session, also ist der Tisch am Ende völlig eskaliert. Aber hey, wenn man kreativ arbeitet, braucht das Hirn manchmal einfach Raum ohne zu viele Regeln.

Perfektion einfach mal weglassen und geschaut, was passiert. Genau deshalb liebe ich Refraktografie. Es geht so schnell. Es gibt sofortes Feedback – ein cooler Effekt nach dem anderen, den man direkt sehen und fotografieren kann. Instant Gratification auf die beste Art.

Ok what happened here?

What you see here is a simple refraction that comes from a tiny simple light source far away from the camera. You can place a piece of glass (in my case a wine glass) directly in front of the camera or better to say close to the sensor. This time i mean really close to the sensor not the lens! Take for the lens and place the camera on the table > go to live view and just see what develops!

Was ihr hier seht, ist eine einfache Lichtbrechung – verursacht durch eine kleine Lichtquelle, weit entfernt von der Kamera.

Man nimmt ein Stück Glas (bei mir war’s ein Weinglas) und platziert es direkt vor der Kamera – also wirklich nah am Sensor, nicht am Objektiv!
Objektiv runter, Kamera auf den Tisch, Live View an – und einfach mal schauen, was da so entsteht!

Here I start with no extra Colors or other lights just moving around to find the shapes that stimulate my creative center in the brain.

Hier hab ich erstmal komplett auf zusätzliche Farben oder Lichter verzichtet – einfach nur bewegt und geschaut, welche Formen mein kreatives Zentrum im Gehirn anfeuern.

Adding Colors & Filters

Here I love the lines and the colors creating these soft colors and yet enough texture to make it interesting.

Hier feier ich die Linien und Farben – diese weichen Übergänge, aber trotzdem genug Struktur, damit’s spannend bleibt.

There seem to be an unlimited cool set of shapes and colors to be loved.

Es scheint einfach unendlich viele coole Formen und Farben zu geben, in die man sich verlieben kann.

There are many ways to change the result. You can put filters onto the glass, the light source or directly in front of the camera sensor. On top of that you can change position of additional light /color sources.

Es gibt unzählige Möglichkeiten, das Ergebnis zu verändern. Du kannst Filter aufs Glas packen, auf die Lichtquelle oder direkt vor den Kamerasensor halten. Dazu kommt noch: Position und Farbe von zusätzlichen Lichtquellen ändern – und zack, komplett neuer Look.

Here you see the similarity in the shapes. These two shot are taken shortly one another with only small adjustments to the setup. Moving the glasses only on small steps and check what changes.

Hier sieht man schön die Ähnlichkeit in den Formen. Die beiden Aufnahmen sind kurz hintereinander entstanden – mit nur kleinen Anpassungen am Setup.
Ich hab die Gläser nur minimal verschoben und geschaut, was sich verändert.

What about another Prisms

The method is pretty much relying on refracting light through glass. The shapes are never regular but not happening by chance even though our brain cant predict it.

Now I added a regular shaped glass and hoped for some of the textures and patterns to repeat in cool ways. I put the prism glass (used for photography) just in front of the camera between the wine glass and the sensor. Here I hoped for repetitive patterns. I think I want to do more with that next time.

Die Methode basiert im Grunde darauf, Licht durch Glas zu brechen zu lassen. Die Formen sind dabei meistens unregelmäßig aber nicht zufällig - nur weil unser Gehirn es nicht verhersagen kann ist es nicht zufällig. 🤪 Diesmal hab ich ein Glas mit klarer, regelmäßiger Form ins Spiel gebracht – ein einfaches Prisma, wie man es oft in der Fotografie verwendet. Ich hatte gehofft, damit wiederholende Muster zu erzeugen.

Sieht schon vielversprechend aus – da will ich beim nächsten Mal definitiv mehr mit machen.
