Fiber Optic Light Painting Portraits

Session with Loki

Last week I had the pleasure to do some Black Fiber Optic Light Painting Portraits again. This time Loki joined me for an experimental session with the Fiber Brush. As normal we started with some lighting tests.

Sit there and just hold the light for minute

She just jumped into some colorful dress while i was setting up my gear. Then I said just sit over there and grab the light. i will add some more effects and light to see what works in our set up. Let us see what develops.

Her Attitude

From the start pretty much all attempts ended up in cool images. Loki standing against the wall allowed her to stand still for a looong while and i can keep the lens open for loooong. These shots are all single exposures, with some exposure times like 170 seconds. I was always staying around F16-20 and the camera set to ISO 400ish.

Testing all the leftover color gels.

Yellowish Green to Orange

The more colors you get the more it becomes a matter of taste. I usually go through a few more colors and sets than I usually estimate what I going to like. When I am back on my computer I can usually better judge with a fresh eye what works and what's over the top. So many times I was surprised going through the night one more time by looking at all the shots.

Anyhow the beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I am not going to dictate what you like. But please tell me which once you like.

Bonus Shot

I was already packing when Loki gout out a scarf and said its going to be hard to make use of this piece. No > let me show you ..... 5min Later we had those two wonderful Light Paintings on our Memory Card.

Fell in love with these tow shots immediately.

Holy crap, how have I not seen your work before?!

Is this just a fibre optic curtain that you're using, or it something more bespoke and custom?

How do you deal with light spill onto the backdrop / environment (heaps of black flags, I guess)?!

Sorry for all the technical questions, but I want to seriously make an attempt at something like this in my garage at some point.

So ephemeral and ethereal!
