Take my Breath away. Berlin.

avatar

En route to Succhitito a coffee break and bog stop was requested by some of the people I was travelling with.

I wanted nor required either and after being told the stop would be about 45 mins ( fuck me how long does it take to swallow a cup of coffee and empty ones bladder?). I wandered off.

Didn't know what to expect, not much I guessed as it wasn't a "proper" stop, chance to see some real people and stuff.

_DSC0199.jpeg

In deepest darkest central America I thought it was a piss take that we were in Berlin but the name originates from Serafín Brennen, a German citizen who ended up here after surviving a shipwreck. The town was then called Agua Caliente somehow he made an agreement with the residents to rename the village after Berlin. Germany actually is one of leading European trading partners with El Salvador and is the largest importer of Salvadoran coffee.

_DSC0171.jpeg

A wander around this quiet unassuming town was a joy, little did I know of its history; even though our leader had said this was his home town, he said nothing. I guess fear and suspicion still run rife amongst Salvadorans

Berlin, a small picturesque mountain town with a population of 20,000 people.

It wasn't always so.

_DSC0197.jpeg

During the Salvadoran Civil War, Berlín was one of the most affected areas.

_DSC0205.jpeg

_DSC0202.jpeg

Early in 1983, FMLN freedom fighters, following violent combat with Government forces, entered the town and took control.

_DSC0204.jpeg

_DSC0210.jpeg

This made it become the most important city taken over by guerrillas since the beginning of the war.

_DSC0225.jpeg

_DSC0218.jpeg

After the FMLN gained ownership of the city, the Salvadoran military mobilised many soldiers from other areas to attempt to regain control of Berlín.

_DSC0193.jpeg

_DSC0169.jpeg

In the week that the freedom Fighters controlled Berlin, before retreating, both the Salvadoran military and their american military advisors were astounded by the guerrillas' ability to initiate attacks of such importance and input such ferocity

In this house we want a life free of violence towards women

_DSC0189.jpeg

At least five blocks of the city center were completely destroyed. An estimated 27 government forces and 258 civilians has been killed during the conflict.

Etched in their faces

_DSC0168.jpeg

_DSC0170.jpeg

_DSC0195.jpeg

What stories these faces could tell, all the little old ladies going about their business, are they former freedom fighters, or govt. supporters, what dreams of heroic action sends them to sleep? What nightmares awaken them at the witching hour?

_DSC0208.jpeg

Was the struggle and sacrifice worth it? Democracy is in place

There are massive crackdowns on gangs and drugs and violence

If you suck up the amnesty international globalist agenda, There are allegedly still violations of human rights "inside cells, the extreme overcrowding, which result in violations of the right to life and physical integrity, and in insanitary conditions, food shortages and lack of basic hygiene, seriously affecting the health of detainees"

IF YOU CAN'T DO THE TIME
DON'T DO THE CRIME.

I had spotted these two guys entering a convenience store and thought, "hang about if it's a robbery, get some snaps, win a pulitzer prize" When they came out shortly the gunless guy was all smiles and pointed to me to take some pics, with a nod of the head and an encouraging gesture he even stepped into the frame with his bodyguard.

Friendly people the Salvadorans.

In the spring of 2023 a Crypto currency center opened in the town to educate people about the use of Bitcoin. Adoption of Bitcoin use by local businesses and residents has been growing steadily since.

Oh, the title 😂

The history of this city and the need people have to have an armed bodyguard is not that funny, unfortunately 😔

A play on words 😂, a remarkable town sad history, so recent in time, apparently if you can afford a bodyguard you need one!

Oh wow, what an adventure you're on!

Great shots too!

What a conflicting place it must be, to now be at peace, but still need to have an armed bodyguard.

And again, conflicting faces- those with huge open smiles and the others just stone faced.

I love how all the women are still wearing aprons and here I am trying to sell my mum's vintage 50/60's aprons and ofcourse, no one wants them case no-one wears them...

How long are you in El Salvador for?

Hi @chocolatescorpi , I was there for 8 days, that trip has ended. I learnt so much and yes armed bodyguards and little old ladies, such a contrast

So was it a trip that could be comfortably fit in in 8 days, or too short?

What made you want to go there?

Was it easy to get in? (and out)

Yes 8 days was a good time, a balance of all things, I spent 3weeks in central America 6 months earlier and fell in love with the place, so wanted to see more of the area and learn about their recent memory troubles, no issues visiting, no visa needed had to go via USA I had an esta so that was ok too

Oh wow you lucky bugga! But still 3 weeks is not long to see so many amazing places though eh?

Does El SAlvador gett many tourists these days?

Whats an Esta?

An esta isa travel document you need to get to visit or travel through USA costs about £20 and valid for 3 years if I remember correctly.

El Salvador is very young in its tourist journey, we didn’t see any other “foreign” tourists at all. 3 weeks is never enough!

Oh Sweet thanks for letting me now.

I did stay in the USA many years ago but I don't remember having an ESTA so maybe its a new-ish thing - post 2000's..and good to know because I intend on traveling next year.

Think it would be safe for a middle aged white girl (OMG I can't just believe that I called myself middle aged. How RUDE! (but unfortunately a bit true...😭...) to travel through El Salvador herself?

Yeah think it’s since the twin towers, well I did it but as a white bloke 😂, part of an adventure group , a bunch of strangers , probably best that way

Oh how life has changed- since the twin towers and since I hit the big 50.

Pre twin towers travel anywhere wasn't as big as a red tape issue and when I was younger I was happy to travel alone- every where and anywhere...

Interesting history simply going into small town, walking taking photos to relate the region.

Those fortunate enough have a body guard, living through tough times definitely etched on the faces. Those behind bars shouldn't have human rights complain about their living conditions, worry about the elderly who have suffered the brunt of living through such conditions.

While I was reading you, I was thinking I would say something to you about Bitcoin... I got to the end and there was that line. But wait... the Berlin title threw me off too. I said to myself: but this guy is now in Germany?

Aren't you afraid to see people like that with guns in the street? (imagino que perdiste un poco el aliento, sí)

Friendly people the Salvadorans.

Y aquí lo recuperaste!

This government has greatly reduced the influence of the gangs in El Salvador, but these scum are still present and very violent. The Maras... they are terrible.

😂 yes I was not in Germany, seeing the guy with the gun actually fascinated me, it is not something you see in the U.K. and being the inquisitive sort I just stopped and stared, I can’t help myself. I guess I am weird as I don’t worry to much about life in general. Knife crime is a big thing in the U.K. but it is gang on gang related which is fine so long as they are only killing each other.
