This mountaintop park offers great fun and amazing peak views. Ride the Tbilisi Funicular to reach the top and before entering the park, stop by the overlook to enjoy the vistas from Tbilisi’s highest point. Have a go on the massive Ferris wheel, Ghost Castle dark ride, carousels and water slides—all while you're at over 2,500 feet above sea level. Stick around till after dark to enjoy the Tbilisi city lights from above. Entrance to the park is free though there's a fee for individual attractions and the funicular. My husband and I finally set foot in Georgia for the first time last December. A destination we had long been curious about. We only had five days, so every hour felt valuable. After landing in Tbilisi, we checked into our hotel and leaving our luggage in the room and made a rapid decision. It was a bit rainy but we didn’t want to idle our first day resting indoors. We stepped right back out, ready to explore, letting the soft drizzle add a quiet charm to the beginning of our adventure.
Travel for us is about mobility, prying and the simple joy of discovery. A fast hunt led us to Mtatsminda Amusement Park, one of the city’s most popular attractions. To our surprise it was just a minute away from our hotel. We walked toward the park, we passed a small park where we paused for photos. Soft laughter savoring the feeling of being somewhere new together.
When we reached the park, the entrance was free, which already makes the experience feel welcoming. But we paid for the funicular ride knowing it would take us on a memorable journey to the top. The cable-driven railway climbed steeply up the mountain. For five peaceful minutes we were bordered by thick greenery on both sides. It makes a natural tunnel that feels relaxing and intimate. Along the climb we spotted a monastery settled among the mountains. It was encircled by big evergreen trees standing silently in the fog. It was a spot that filled our hearts with wonder.
At the peak, the space opened wide, giving a calm world far removed from the city’s bustle below. The air felt cooler. The environs soothed by fog and towering trees stood like gentle guardians of the park. The iconic Mtatsminda building is a distinct architectural landmark adorned with grand columns, ornate ceilings, and several inviting restaurants. The pathways were wet from the rain and the weather remained foggy, so we skipped the panoramic city view, we didn’t mind at all.
We continued walking and came across shops in the area. Some were already closed for the day. We reached another entrance marked by two white lion statues guarding a staircase and was surrounded by dense trees and bushes. The grid patterned paths, benches and corners made the place feel perfect for slow walks and placid picnics.
We came across a children’s play area plugged with colorful slides, coasters and even a small pool. It was raining and already late in the afternoon, the place was still and empty. It gives an almost peaceful ambiance.
There were cafés and ice cream stalls spread throughout the park. These stalls turned simple pauses into moments of rest and satisfaction. It's best to slow down and immerse in the beauty of the park.
We saw a large Christmas tree standing at the center of walkway near a fountain and decorative sculpture. It adds warmth and a vibrant touch to the misty afternoon.
One of the park’s most amazing highlights was the massive Ferris wheel. It stands tall and elegant against the misty sky. Its size and presence stunned us. It governs the view like a silent guardian watching over the city below. I couldn’t stop catching the moment. I took photo after photo, trying to save the beauty of that fleeting view. My husband found an area to sit. He stared into the hazy distance. He was deeply engaged in the serene surroundings. It was comforting to watch him, still and reflective. As if the world had slowed down just for us. I soon joined him, setting my camera aside and together we allowed ourselves a peaceful pause.
As we continued we passed the Tbilisi TV Tower gleaming in blue and pink against the cloudy sky.
Our visit ended with a cable car ride down the mountain. We enjoyed despite the rain and limited visibility. When we reached the lower station of the Rustaveli–Mtatsminda cable car, the flowing architectural design, curved walkways and festive garlands instantly amazed us. We left the park feeling deeply content. The weather didn’t matter. Mtatsminda Amusement Park welcomed us with peace, beauty and quiet joy. An unforgettable first memory of Georgia that we will always carry with us.
