Ogrodzieniec Castle and a Hike Around Dramatic Rock Formations

Early on in our travels in Poland, while moving towards the southern part of the country, we made a stop at an interesting location. The Ogrodzieniec Castle, next to a town called Podzamcze. It's a grand medieval fortress built on top of a limestone hill. Well, it's actually a ruin, but quite a bit still remains of this castle. We checked out this castle and also a trail called Eagle's Nest, which this castle is a part of.

Originally, there was a wooden structure built in the 12th century, but it burned down. The stone castle was built in the 14th century. Swedish troops caused major damage to the fortress in the 17th century, and it was finally abandoned in 1810.

There was a ticket to get into the castle walls, which we decided not to buy. After all, we were able to see inside the walls from above on, on top of the limestone hills. Views you will soon see. But let's proceed with the limestone cliffs. In a forest next to this castle, there were rock formations like that.

It reminded me of the formations I saw in the Czech Republic, in Bohemia national park. Very similar.
Of course, we tried to climb on top of the limestone cliffs. Saw the view of a local town.

The limestone cliffs at Ogrodzieniec Castle formed through ancient marine sedimentation, sponge-reef growth, and millions of years of chemical weathering. 150 million years ago, the whole of southern Poland was submerged under a warm, shallow shelf sea. Same as Estonia, where I live. About 65 million years ago, tectonic plate activity pushed the land upwards and left the seafloor exposed. In simple terms, the erosion after that washed away sediment and left the tougher parts of the rock standing there.

We climbed the rocks surrounding the castle. Got some pretty epic views up there overlooking the castle grounds.

Saw a dove there next to the trail. Oddly enough, the dove did not move at all when we walked past. It was some serious courage, I would say. I didn't try to pet it, but I wonder if I would have been able to if I wanted.

On the maps, I found one more spot that was marked as an attraction, which was a little ways off in the forest. We decided to take a hike there and see what we could find. Walked over meadows and small trails until we arrived at a spot called Baszty za niebieskim szlakiem.

It was basically a rock formation on a hill like the other ones you have already seen in my photos, only smaller and rather underwhelming compared to others. Well, at least we got some steps in.

In total, we hiked about 5 kilometers or something on the Eagles Nest Trail. We did not plan to visit this place at all beforehand. The previous evening, we searched for places to see on the way towards Krakow. I'm happy about our choice because it sure was worth it. The castle was awesome to see, and the trail with these rock formations was also interesting to explore. Definitely recommended for you if you happen to go there.
