Life Cycle of the Sunflower I Planted In Early Summer

avatar

I planted several different plants this summer but I was especially amazed by the sunflowers and the results I got. I got myself some red sunflower seeds. I decided to go for a red one because I had never seen it before. I planted the seeds and on the 16th of June, I already saw them emerging from the ground.

I think I should have planted it earlier because it took a long time to grow large and start blooming. I did see an upcoming flower but I already started to worry that the sunflower might not even have time to start blooming because autumn is approaching. It wasnt until the end of August that the flower finally opened. The following pictures are taken on 30-th August.

The red color really was absolutely beautiful.

I also saw that there is another flower on the same plant that is not opened. To be honest, I had absolutely no idea that one sunflower plant can have several blooms.

I also tied the stem of the flower to a pole because I was afraid that the wind might snap it in half.

After that, I went away from home and traveled for 2 weeks. When I arrived back home I saw that the original flower crown leaves were gone. But to my amazement, the previous unopened flower was now blooming. Moreover, I was seeing 2 more unopened flowers on the same plant. For sure these don't have time to start blooming right?
The following 3 pictures are taken on 27-th September.

Again, to my amazement, the remaining flowers also opened as late as in October, the weather had already gotten pretty cold. These flowers didn't seem very well formed as the first one. Probably due to the late time of the year. For some reason, they are also not red but yellow.
Still, my sunflower is STILL BLOOMING!
The following photos are taken on 14-th October, quite recently.

Today, at the moment of writing this( 26 October ), this sunflower still looks pretty much the same even though we have had temperatures below freezing. This is also the only flower that is still blooming in my yard, pretty cool.

Let's see how long it lasts but I'm pretty sure it's not going to stay that way after a week or so. I can already see some large leaves starting to change color slightly to yellow.
I will definitely plant some more sunflowers next spring/summer. Also, next time earlier than I did the last time.

You should! The height of this really depends on where it grows and what soil it has. I planted several but except this one tall one the others were half its lenght.
