Hiking the Volcanic Crater Eldborg
The name of the crater is Eldborg. Eldborg means crater in Icelandic so the craters name is crater😀. In fact there are seven craters on Iceland that are named Eldborg. This particular crater can also be called GEITAHLÍÐ as I found out from the internet but still its better known as Eldborg, even in google maps.
It is located in Reykjanes peninsula, on southwest Iceland. I never planned to hike it but I found myself having some free time. I have driven past it at least 6 times in total during my previous trips. I found out that indeed there is a small trail that leads you up there.
The hike was not hard nor log but had a steep section on the craters wall.
This crater erupted about 4500 years ago. Is 50m above the sea level and inner depth of this crater is 30 meters. Around this main crater there are several smaller craters that also erupted at the same time.
I took this panorama. Made of 3 vertical pictures because this crater is really large and my lens is not wide enough to fit it al in one frame.
You can walk on the rim and do a round trip of this crater.
From above some nice views appear and you can see the nearby mountains in one direction and the lava fields that this volcano flooded on the other side towards the ocean.
I didnt see any other people there hiking this. Thats why I love being on Iceland... Yes the famous locations are often crowded but find any place that is not very well knows, you hardly see anoyone so you get to have this crazy good feeling of being one with the nature. There are so many gem location in Iceland only a very small amount of tourists know about.
Some more views around me.
This is a shot of the full crater from below. I took this when leaving the site.
Don't forget to participate in my monthly Weather Game here and have a chance to win 10 HIVE. Open until 17-th Nov.
Congratulations, your post has been added to Pinmapple! 🎉🥳🍍
Did you know you have your own profile map?
And every post has their own map too!
Want to have your post on the map too?
Oh I really like this location. The views from the crater are wonderful.
It was really nice yes. Drone views of this crater would be dope.
Fascinating
Indeed!
Beautiful place but it has quite and eerie feel to it as well. Do you know what kind of volcano it is?
Its a shield volcano
I love to observe signs of liquid lava flows that are recorded into the landscapem
Oh awesome. I'm going to go read up on them, I'm terrible with different types of volcanos (identifying them that is) but I'm fascinated by how they work and how they totally change the landscape. Is there obsidian glass there from that one or is it mostly like pummice stone?
Mostly like pummice stone. At least the stones have many air bubbles and holes inside them. These stones are really sharp too.
I also visited the site that erupted this year. Sadly I missed the eruption itself by 2 days. Will make a post about it soon
i love the view you had from above. the scenery looks like something from Game of Thrones thing which is actually great!
Well, game of thrones was partially set on Iceland. At least I think it was, I have heard something but I havent watched it myself
ohh that makes sense now!
Awesome island!! it is always nice to see some corners of Iceland. Even better there where no humans around you, I have never been that far north, but I bet walking through those landscapes with nothing human around must be a very impressive feeling... anyway it was also very nice to "just" look at the photos:)
I always love to take on a hike to somewhere not so famous and go to places where most tourists never go.
The place itself was really nice yes!
Yes definitely worth to pick a less hyped and crowded destination...!
Silence, solitude and views, enough to tackle the steep sections driving one up to the brim. Amazing photography!
Thanks, always on the hunt for such places!
The place really amazed me! Especially the view from above. ❤️
