Hiking Around the Peninsula, On Beach Only - Põõsaspea Peninsula
About two months ago, I took on a hike, walking 10km, but only along the shoreline, well, mostly... I'll get to that later. It's a peninsula in northwestern Estonia, a place with few inhabitants. Mostly, there are some homes that are used as summer houses. I'm not sure if there are any permanent residents. The shoreline I walked on also changes constantly and it doesn't look the same as I go along.
I started walking from the Eastern side of the peninsula.
The weather was calm and only had a little wind at the time. These were my views on this side.
The sky was a little cloudy and I didn't know if I would see any sunset, but I had my hopes up.
Here you can see how the shore changed from sand and rocks to being visibly made of limestone. That's pretty cool to see, especially for me, who's interested in geology.
I approached the tip of the peninsula, the lighthouse became visible. I could also see that the sky cleared up by that time and I will get to enjoy the sunset most likely.
Yep, I did...
Here is a screenshot I took from Google Maps. Here you can clearly see the whole peninsula and on top of that, there is another peninsula where I took all of the photos you see here. Maybe it's more correct to say cape, not peninsula for that.
I stayed there for about 30 minutes. Sat on the rock and took in the silence and sunset.
I had to get moving because I had a lot of distance still to cover and the sun was going down. I knew that I would be left in the darkness at some point.
I walked back on the west side of the peninsula.
I mentioned before that I walked only on the shoreline, but well, mostly... This is because I have to get back to where I started from, where the car is and that's a problem when hiking on the beach only. Someone either needs to come and pick me up, or I have to walk back the same way I came.
To prevent going back the same way, this is the reason why I chose the peninsula, cause I can walk a round trip. That also means I can't start from the beach exactly and have to leave the shore to make it back to the car. In that case, I had to walk a deep forest in the darkness, a bit spooky stuff.
Overall, it was a great hike, and I look forward to more beach/shoreline hiking in gorgeous places whenever possible to do so.
