Exploring Tudu Bog and Running From a Thunderstorm

Back in July, I had to drive to Eastern Estonia, and on my way, I decided to make a quick stop to see some places I had not seen yet. When I'm going to a bog in the Eastern part of the country, then this can't be the only purpose of this trip. It doesn't make much sense to drive that long to only take a walk in the bog. So since I had to go east anyway, it was a good idea to try and fit more places in my trip.

So this is a Tudu bog, as I said already, in eastern Estonia. Not far from Lake Peipus. Now I could cross yet another bog off my list that I had not seen yet, and there are not that many left.

The trail to the bog lake(the end point) starts as a wooden path, like most of our bog trails, because you can't really walk on the boggy landscape without an elevated trail.

There were different information tables on the trail. Mostly it's information about bogs that I already know anyway, but one particular info was interesting. It said that some uprooted trees can still be seen, which are the result of a tornado that leveled the bog forests 15 years ago. I didn't know where to look for exactly, but it was interesting to know.

The weather was hot, with an unstable airmass. At this point, I heard thunder, somewhere a good distance away from me. I looked at the weather radar and sure enough, there was a thunderstorm that was moving towards my location. I still had time, but my pace definitely quickened.

Soon I reached the place that I wanted to see. It was a bog forest shack at the edge of a bog lake.

If you have your sleeping equipment with you, then you can spend the night in there.
There is also a fireplace right next to the shack. I can imagine that it would be really enjoyable to spend a summer evening there.

It was hot and would have been good to have a quick swim in the lake, but I had no time for it. Just took some photos of the lake.

Having spent some time there, it was time to start going back because I really wanted to avoid being caught in the middle of a strong thunderstorm and downpour. I could hear how the rumbling sounds of the thunder came closer and closer by the minute. I kept a close eye on the weather radar and it seemed like I had about 20 minutes before it all arrived at my location.

I didn't take many photos going back besides this one.

I was basically half running back to the car. Fortunately, I made it, but barely. About two minutes after I made it to the car, the thunderstorm arrived with heavy rain.

All in all, it was a beautiful place and at some point, in the summers to come, I might make my way back there to enjoy the summer evening by the fire and maybe stay overnight in the shack there.
