Brimketill Lava Rock Pools

Brimketill lava rock pools are well... pools that are naturally created on the coastline of Iceland at Reykjanes Peninsula. Basically, all of this coastline is relatively new lava rock, in geological terms. This field formed between 1210-1240 in Reykjanes fires event. The pools are created by water erosion. The endless pounding of the waves has created several of these pools in the area.

In recent times the platform has been built there to make it easier to see these pools because its really dangerous to climb the rocks there.

Brimketill in direct translation means whitewater cauldron.

I have heard that some people even go in these pools to take a swim. I find it extremely stupid. First of all the rocks are very slippery, you can fall and smash your head. Secondly, the waves often overcome the edge of the pool and the pool drains, this can sweep you into the ocean.

After all the water in these pools is not thermally heated, it's just seawater which is around 10 degrees C so I don't find it particularly enjoyable to take a dip there anyway.

Here are some more pictures from this area.

People are crazy to dip into open sea pools like this if they don't know the currents and tides, bit cool to enjoy a swim!

Water is amazing in clarity against the black slippery rocks.

Yeah, it is really dangerous. Some people just dont have much common sense. Every year tourists die in Iceland due to the ocean and currents.

Our coastline has wicked rip-tides every so often, bathers who don't listen are swept out to sea.

At the moment our sea and rivers are E-Coli polluted, we have not been onto the beach since April which is most upsetting for all who enjoy taking beach walks or river walks with pets.

Oh damn, that's a shame. I hope your situation with this bacteria will resolve soon.
