Nature and its wise life lessons | reflections

Just as the passage of time comes to put everything in its right place, so the experiences of life teach us that in order to be dressed in hope, it is first necessary to get rid of self-inflicted guilt.

We live eager for answers that help us understand the mysteries of existence... of our existence. We get lost among self-help books, motivational podcasts, and self-improvement therapies; all valid options in this process of discovery. However, we ignore the lessons that humbly and silently nature give us every day. Lessons of perseverance and resilience, of balance and harmony. To honor our connection with the natural world is to learn to live fully.

Así como el paso del tiempo viene a poner cada cosa en su justo lugar, así las experiencias de la vida nos enseñan que para vestirnos de esperanza, antes es necesario despojarnos de las culpas autoinfligidas.

Vivimos ávidos de respuestas que nos ayuden a comprender los misterios de la existencia… de nuestra existencia. Nos perdemos entre libros de autoayuda, podcasts motivacionales y terapias de superación; todas, opciones válidas en ese proceso de descubrimiento. No obstante, ignoramos las lecciones que con humildad y en silencio nos da a diario la sabia naturaleza. Lecciones de perseverancia y resiliencia, de equilibrio y armonía. Honrar nuestra conexión con el mundo natural, es aprender a vivir con plenitud.

No spring without autumn.

The trees, before showing themselves green and leafy, expose themselves to everyone with their completely naked bodies, without any shame. By their appearance, anyone could suppose that they are going through a process of decay, vulnerability, and even the end of their days; but in reality, they are only preparing to survive the winter and re-emerge stronger, healthier, and more vigorous. In their nature, there is no failure: to let go of that which has already withered in order to become green again.

We human beings also live our own autumn, we also face life's onslaughts. Problems and adversities, although undesirable, are inevitable. Unlike trees, it is hard for us to let go, it is not easy for us to let go; we carry for a long time responsibilities or guilts that do not belong to us, nor correspond to us, but that we assume as our own by conviction and stubbornness. A heavy burden that, like a condemnation, keeps us unceremoniously away from the longed-for spring.

By instinct, perhaps for survival, we cling to everything we believe or feel gives us security, whatever it is, even if they are only withered leaves; and we do it based on the fear of recognizing ourselves vulnerable, for fear of showing our human frailty (to other humans), for the fear that gives us to bare our soul. Paradoxically, it is in the midst of difficulties that we can really show with determination what we are made of, it is in adversity when the indomitable character that demonstrates our courage, strength, and resilience emerges. But, as Mr. Hermes Pinzón, Betty's father, would say: "the devil is sly", and he constantly conspires against us to make us lose faith in ourselves.

No hay primavera sin otoño.

Los árboles, antes de mostrarse verdes y frondosos, se exponen ante todos con su dorso completamente desnudo, sin que ello suponga vergüenza alguna. Por su apariencia, cualquier podría suponer que están atravesando un proceso de decadencia, vulnerabilidad, e incluso, el fin de sus días; pero en realidad solo están preparándose para sobrevivir al invierno y volver a resurgir más fuertes, sanos y vigorosos. En su naturaleza no hay fallos: soltar aquello ya marchito para poder reverdecer.

Los seres humanos también vivimos nuestro propio otoño, también nos enfrentamos a los embates de la vida. Los problemas y las adversidades, aunque indeseables, son inevitables. A diferencia de los árboles, a nosotros nos cuesta mucho dejar ir, nos cuesta soltar, liberar; cargamos a cuesta por mucho tiempo responsabilidades o culpas que no nos pertenecen, ni nos corresponden, pero que asumimos como propias por convicción y terquedad. Una pesada carga que como condena nos aleja sin contemplación de la tan anhelada primavera.

Por instinto, tal vez de supervivencia, nos aferramos a todo aquello que creemos o sentimos nos brinda seguridad, lo que sea, así sean solo hojas marchitas; y lo hacemos basados en el temor de reconocernos vulnerables, por el miedo de mostrar nuestra fragilidad humana (a otros humanos), por el pavor que nos da desnudar el alma. Paradójicamente, es en medio de las dificultades cuando realmente podemos demostrar con determinación de que estamos hechos, es en la adversidad cuando aflora el carácter indomable que demuestra nuestra valentía, fortaleza y resiliencia. Pero, como diría Don Hermes Pinzón, el papá de Betty, “el diablo es puerco”, y conspira constantemente en contra para hacernos perder la fe en nosotros mismos.

Like the trees in autumn, we too must accept that in life there are times of fortune and times of misfortune. While we aspire to a greater extent to enjoy moments of happiness, in times of adversity we can discover a universe of opportunity, growth, and improvement. Inevitably, due to countless circumstances in life, we will always experience anguish, difficulties, and pain, but if we believe in ourselves we will always find ways to overcome them and emerge stronger.

Only by stripping ourselves of the dry leaves will we be able to resurface healthily in the following spring. It is then fair and necessary to shake ourselves from time to time to let them fall, without regrets, without guilt, without shame, and without the shame of nudity expressed in what people will say. Fuck what they say or think, it's our fight, no one else is going to fight that battle for us. Surrender can never be an option to consider, even less knowing that the reward for winning is to flourish again.

Al igual que los árboles en otoño, nosotros también debemos aceptar que en la vida hay momentos de venturas y de desventuras. Que, si bien aspiramos en mayor medida disfrutar de momentos de felicidad, en los tiempos de adversidad podemos descubrir un universo de oportunidades, crecimiento y mejora. Inevitablemente, por incontables circunstancias de la vida, siempre vamos a experimentar angustias, dificultades y dolor, pero si creemos en nosotros mismos siempre hallaremos las maneras de superarlos y de salir fortalecidos.

Solo despojándonos de las hojas secas podremos resurgir saludablemente en la primavera siguiente. Es entonces justo y necesario sacudirnos de vez en cuando para dejarlas caer, sin arrepentimientos, sin culpas, sin pudor, y sin la vergüenza de la desnudez traducida en el qué dirán. Al carajo lo que digan o piensen, es nuestra lucha, nadie más va a librar esa batalla por nosotros. Rendirse no puede ser nunca una opción a considerar, menos sabiendo que la recompensa de ganar, es volver a florecer.
