Next bike trip exposes the "real" Vietnam
Vietnam is a wonderful place and I am glad that I live here. I don't know of a cheaper place in the world that is also safe and I have lived in quite a few places.
It's special, I like it for the most part, but just like anything, it is far from perfect. The bad comes with the good and this neighborhood I stumbled upon on a last trip is a very good example of both of these things at once.

I was just wandering with no particular destination in mind when I came across this neighborhood that has almost no buildings in it but it already had the perfect streets, streetlights, electric and water already placed underground (no aerial wires going all over the place like a lot of Asia) and nobody even lives here yet. This is a forward planning aspect of Vietnam or specifically, Da Nang, that I really enjoy. After living in Thailand for over a decade where they build like one electrical wire and string it down the road on an aerial and just make a mess of the place, then don't install anywhere near as much water pressure as is needed for what the neighborhood ends up becoming. Here in Da Nang, there really isn't even anyone living here yet and virtually no businesses either, but the infrastructure is in place for when it does happen - which could be many years down the road.
That's the good... The bad should be evident but I am going to give you a play-by-play anyway.

All around this future neighborhood there is dumped garbage just everywhere. A lot of it is construction debris as well and that is something that I think should be punished. Since there isn't much construction going on it wouldn't exactly be some huge mystery about where the left behind materials came from.

All the while that I was riding, in the shade mind you because of the planning done on the trees that lined ALL of the roads, there is just garbage thrown all over the place and it doesn't look like anyone is coming by to pick it up anytime soon.

There are also these rather large dumpsters every 100 meters or so and here's the thing: There are no houses here so where is this garbage even coming from. There's literally no houses or businesses around so was this trucked in from another area?

It carries on like this for miles and miles and of course, it stinks because garbage that is left in the sun to rot tends to not be the most wonderfully fragrant thing in the world. This is within sight of one of the rivers here that is well-known for being badly polluted as well. I wonder how that happened?
This river connects to the nearby seaside where people frolic in the waves all day as well. Awesome.
So while I am not going to try to get all judgmental about how people live their lives this just seems incredibly irresponsible no matter where you come from or where you live. They put all this time into pre-planning an area, putting in all the infrastructure in honestly, a very admirable way, then they just walk away and the place fills up with garbage.
Is the idea that whoever buys the land will clean it up. Is that how it works? Because if I was thinking about building a house over here the constant stink of rotting trash would probably turn me off to that idea.
But I suppose it will work itself out in the end but it just seems such a shame to me. You have what could be a wonderful area that is completely ruined by people being lazy. Since this is Vietnam I would imagine that someone will come by at some point and burn all of it because despite the fact that this is one of the most heavily populated cities in all of Vietnam, the burning of trash on the roadside is extremely common here and when it happens, nobody even bats an eye. It's just "normal."
I enjoyed the nice streets and the pre-planned shade but I can't see myself going back here because the stench was just unreal. Pity!
Vietnam is a beautiful place to live in. There are many perks. The citizens should realize its worth and take care of their homeland. Great thoughts.
nice place tho it kinda sad to see other wreck and not proper place but yet it looks peaceful at the same time. its good to see doing activities like this so more happy memories with your companion pls. Thank you for giving attention about that so others gonna know too about the real phenomenon events there and to the other country. I hope somebody have like this concern on what happened in the place where they be. Someones need to do so about this and please be careful where you are.
I really can't see anyone doing anything. Garbage is everywhere in this city that isn't constantly monitored by security guards.
Oh! There's so much garbage. It looks so sad that they destroyed their environment.
As soon as possible theres a solution for someone throwing the garbage. It will be more better and beautiful is we see our place clean. Hope everyone is responsible for what their doing. 🥰
The problem is this is seen as commercial waste so they pay by weight at the dump and if the dump sites were free there would be no waste dumped else where which must cost more for clean ups than the dump sites currently earn. It makes no financial sense and no common sense.
I wonder if they still wouldn't dump it in the neighborhood they are in just because of proximity. It's impossible to know
Here in Krabi, which isn't even very populated, it is extremely common for builders to just walk away and leave all of their trash behind. Vacant lots of land also get turned into dumps pretty fast. I have noticed that some land owners who are not using the land will actually put up big fences around the property to prevent others from turning it into a dump site. It really is a shame that people can't be counted on to just put garbage where it is meant to go. It's not like the process is expensive... my trash pickup fee for what I think is a near unlimited amount is around $1 a month. I can't imagine the people that are transporting this trash to this remote place are spending less than that to dispose of this.
if that is the case here it just goes to show how lazy people are. Rather than make that one trip to the dump it is far easier to just dump it on the ground when nobody is looking even though by doing so they are making the very area that they are trying to sell, ugly.
The garbage situation hits like a punch to the gut. It’s such a letdown to see all that potential overshadowed by careless dumping. I hope someone takes action.
it's just greed and laziness
Exactly! It’s sad because it ruins a good place.
If it wasn't all the construction garbage I would have guessed it was people illegal dumping, but it sounds like it is a combination of both. Hopefully if they ever do continue development, they will try to get it cleaned up. Maybe it's out of the way for the garbage truck to go there when there are no houses yet.
it must be one of those things that became too much trouble to police and it is just understood that whoever takes over the land it will be their responsibility to beautify it. I do know that there are several blocks of condos and apartments that are gated and nobody gets in there even though it is one of the best direct routes through a place. The fear might be that it would turn into a dump site as well
Yeah, you are probably right. The way you talk Vietnam is fairly safe, so I am guessing the gated community thing is more of a status symbol than anything else?
It's hard to say. Almost all places have secure parking and night security guards so I'm not going to say that this place is perfectly safe. I did have a bicycle stolen that was outside all night after all. I think the gated communities likely are primarily status but also to prevent the roaming salepeople with speakers on their motorbikes and cars from running around the streets and noise polluting, also so it doesn't become a drag-racing strip for motorbike punks. I can't imagine that it is meant to keep out anything violent. From what I have seen there is virtually zero violent crime here at all.
Ah, okay, so it's more nuisance control that anything. That's a fair assessment. It's funny about the sales person thing. My wife and I never really get visitors, so whenever someone knocks on the door or rings the doorbell we are always a bit WTF because we know it's probably a sales person.

Above all, I love traveling by bike, it has been my habit since childhood. But I am happy to know that you also like it. However, this beautiful and mysterious road with natural scenery around is truly a symbol of beauty. It is interesting to see the nature of the far and wide from such a place. At the same time, taking garbage by truck on the side of the road is not good for the environment. If there is garbage behind the houses, how did it come? If that is the question, the garbage of people living in far and wide can be brought for destruction by the city corporation. However, we all have to be aware of cleaning the garbage and work to maintain the peace of the country and society.
Its sad to see that other people there really can just leave their trashes in the side of the road. That area is a perfect place to have a morning walk or a morning afternoon run. Its just so sad that they ruined it.
