"The First Banquet of Titus" [EN/ES]
"The First Banquet of Titus"
Tito was not a dog that begged for alms. He was more of an observer. From the other side of the street, under the shade of a mango tree, he had seen many people passing by; Some threw a stone at him to make him leave, others yelled at him, and most simply walked by as if he were part of the landscape.
But that morning, something was different. Tito sniffed the air and perceived a smell that was neither that of fear nor indifference. It was the smell of intention. And that's when I approached him.
Remember that, for Tito, food had always been a treasure that had to be fought over with pigeons and cats, something that had to be swallowed quickly before someone kicked it. That's why, at first, he hesitated. He stayed still, with his brown gaze fixed on me, measuring my movements with the wisdom that only the street gives.
I put the food on the floor, took a few steps away, and waited. That wait, for Tito, was like signing a peace contract.
With feline caution, he took one step, then another. When his nose brushed against the food and he didn't feel any shock, his entire body relaxed. It was then that, for the first time in a long time, his jaw unlocked and revealed his pink tongue.
As he chewed, his tail, which previously went between his paws, began to move gently from side to side. It wasn't riotous joy, it was a gesture of gratitude. There, under the spots of sun that filtered through the leaves, Tito not only found a plate of food; found a moment of peace.
And in his stray dog mind, he knew he was no longer "the street dog." Now, at least to someone, he was simply Tito.
Tito is so adorable!
