Wednesday walk in Kalemegdan
Hello dear friends!
Today you will walk with me through the biggest park in Belgrade. It's Kalemegdan,
To get to it, you have to pass through the most beautiful street, which was turned into a promenade some 30 years ago, namely Knez Mihailova Street. It's a pity that you go to Kalemegdan, as we say, from the Sava side, although if you pass there, you will see the walls of the former fortress and Nebojša's tower.
Let's go on a tour. It is a beautiful and sunny autumn day. We reach Knez Mihailova Street from Balkanska, a small street that in the last century was a street of artisans: blacksmith, baker, lycider, hat maker, furrier, schneider, and the only shop left is a shop where sweets are made, called Bombondžija.
We reach the square called Terazije, and there is the Terazije fountain, right in front of what I consider the most beautiful hotel in Belgrade, which is called Moskva.
Kneza Mihaila Street is always crowded. It doesn't matter what season it is, or what time of day it is, it's always full of tourists, students, passers-by. On the street there are sellers of ice cream, sweets, seeds, corn, chestnuts, artists selling their works and the inevitable musicians.
At the very entrance to Kalemegdan Park, there are always pensioners playing chess. They don't care about time either.
Thematic exhibitions of paintings, handicrafts, literary days are organized every month.
On Kalemegdan there is also the White Zoo, the pavilion of Cveta Zuzurić, where the Days of Poetry and Prose are held, then there is also the Military Museum, the Roman Well, the Ruzica Church.
Huge trees, landscaped promenade, monuments, Dino-park, basketball and tennis court, so there is something for everyone.
The whole park leads to the top, which is the most famous because there is the Pobednik monument, and there is also a wonderful view of the confluence of the Sava and the Danube.
Kalemegdan was a fortress, a fortress where the Serbian army defended itself against the enemy. In the 19th century, Prince Mihailo issued an order to clean up the fortress and create a large park there. He wanted it to remain authentic, with stone paths and the fortress with towers and views not to be touched. That's why Kalemegdan has that special beauty and charm.
I hope you enjoyed the walk. The best thing, though, is that if you have time, or if you plan to travel somewhere, stop in Belgrade and be sure to come to Kalemegdan and do so via Knez Mihailova Street.
Now let's go to the best ice cream in town.
Have a nice day and thank you for walking with me, even if it was like this, in the story and in the photos.
