Valletta – the Tiny Little Capital / Valletta – maličké hlavní město

However impressive Valletta looks from the sea, its 6,000 inhabitants and mere 0.61 sq km rank it among the tiniest capital cities in the world. Yes, the city was built as a heavily fortified fortress in order to protect pilgrims on their path to Jerusalem and Christian ships in general. Its name refers to Jean Parisot de La Valette, a French grand master of the Knights Hospitaller who bravely and successfully led the Knights during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565 against the Ottoman hordes. The Ottomans were outnumbered tenfold, yed the Knights defeated them with minimum casualties. To prevent further invasion, a new fortified capital was established.

Ano, město bylo postaveno jako masivně opevněná pevnost, která měla chránit poutníky na cestě do Jeruzaléma a křesťanské lodě v přilehlých mořích. Město bylo pojmenováno na počest francouzského velmistra řádu Maltézských rytířů Jeana Parisota de La Valette, který statečně, a hlavně úspěšně vedl řád během velkého obléhání Malty Osmany v roce 1565. Navzdory desetinásobné převaze byli Osmané na hlavu poraženi. A aby se muslimové nepokusili o další invazi, založili rytíři nové opevněné hlavní město.

One of the city wall bastions. Canons are still common in many public places in Valletta. Most of them are sealed with concrete but some are still in use for salutes of honour, or even just to "chime" six pm.
