Unity Brewing, Budapest

avatar

I can’t imagine traveling without mingling with locals. I always wonder about their language and customs. What’s the point otherwise? Being a beer buff opens doors: I’ve never visited a craft microbrewery where staff and regulars weren’t eager to share tips on local culture, places tourists often miss, where to eat, and what to do. Since I might be returning to Budapest, Hungary, regularly on business, I feel fortunate to have found the best spot — Unity Brewing. It’s in a district where I’ve decided to book accommodation for future stays. Let me take you there virtually — perhaps we can meet for a pint or two later this year.

Cestování bez toho, abyste se potkávali s lidmi, nedává smysl. Když už někam vyrazím, rád si s nimi popovídám. Vždycky dostanu spoustu zajímavých doporučení a tipů, naučím se alespoň úplné základy jejich jazyka, a vůbec. A když zajdete do nějakého řemeslného pivovárku, těžko v tomhle směru uděláte chybu.

Unity only serves snacks (they had been finalizing a new sausage snack with pickles, which should now be on the menu), but fortunately, there’s hardly a better area in Budapest to find a meal. The former Jewish quarter has turned into a hip neighborhood, with Szimpla Kert and similar alternative ruin bars and a vibrant food scene featuring cuisines from around the globe. It feels like a never-ending street food festival in some of the nooks around here. Trendy boutiques and design stores are plentiful there.

Najdete tu i různé butiky, umělecké a řemeslné obchůdky, a vůbec. Typická hipsterská čtvrť.

Unity is among the newest venues in the area - they celebrated their first anniversary just a few days before I stopped by. Congratulations!

Unity patří k nejnovějším přírůstkům do tohohle koktejlu.

It was a lazy, rainy afternoon just before Easter. I wandered in, took a chair, moved it to the bar like an old barfly cheekily, and chatted with the bartender, who taught me to pronounce Hungarian words—I can read them well enough, yet the language is obviously completely strange to me. It bears no relation to any other language in the world. If the toast "egészségére" feels too tricky after a drink or two, you can say “egi.”

Curious about the name? So was I. The bartender hadn’t been there long and didn’t know, but she asked the best person for me. Mátyus, the founder and head brewer. Over two visits, I spent hours talking with him. Unity connects home brewers and emerging craft breweries in the Budapest scene, bringing interesting collaborations to the taps. Hence the name.

Zeptal jsem se i na jméno. A protože barmanka tu pracuje jen chvíli a nebyla si jistá, šla se zeptat toho nejpovolanějšího. Mátyuse, který Unity založil. Nabízí prostor domovárníkům a malým létajícím pivovarům, a spojuje to nejzajímavější, co v Budapešti vzniká. Proto Unity.

Which brings me to the beers. As I wasn’t a pain in the arse like some people invading the bar in the same manner, I was even served a freshly brewed Belgian Dubbel, Red Monk, before it officially hit the menu on my second visit. Alas, I didn’t take my usual tasting notes and forgot to take a picture. Yet I did note on my phone that, as a fresh Trappist-style ale, it was pleasantly yeasty of that traditional old yeast variety, with mild spice, a dense body of raisin or prune, and a sweet, lingering finish with a hint of coriander.

Mírně kořeněné, hutné pivo s tóny sušených švestek a rozinek. Dochuť byla lehce sladká, sladová, s koriandrovými tóny.

Beers

Another Hazy Day, Hazy IPA
I always let the bartender choose my first beer at a new brewery, and this one was Another Hazy Day. Light pineapple aromas usher a bitter, red-orange body with smooth hop bitterness. The hops dominate in this beer—malt supports the citric notes and makes it hazy. The aftertaste is dry, with a faint pineapple sweetness balanced by the lingering bitterness.

Mango and Vanilla Smoothie Sour
The standout of the first evening: thick and juicy, as dense as the freshly squeezed mango juices I was served in Brazil earlier this year. Decent vanilla notes emerge in the body, accompanying the sour mango flavors surprisingly well. This is a perfect match for anyone who says they don’t like beer—they can sip it all night (and get tipsy; at 6% ABV, it sneaks up).

Elmúlt Dél, West Coast IPA
Elmúlt Dél means "afternoon" in Hungarian. This classic West Coast IPA place hops at the forefront: bittersweet citrus with grapefruit opening the sip, followed by pomelo. The bitterness lingers, urging you to have a snack or another pint, so the afternoon might turn to evening before you know it. (There wasn’t a “night” beer on the menu.)

I believe it’s time for @tibfox to step up to the plate (or glass) and take the #beersaturday challenge! Perhaps we can have a drink in Graz with @detlev, the founding father of #beersaturday, and the rest of the gang :)

Awesome recap and review mate :)

Unfortunately I am not able to jump on the challenge boat because I'm a dry alcoholic ^^ But I hand the invite over to @cryptospa - I hope that he has some good beer review for us!

Can't wait for us to meet in Graz!

Well, there are non-alcoholic brews too :) But of course, this is an excuse that counts :)

I will remember this pub for my next visit to Budapest, which I definitely plan to do.
Just so I'm not late, they probably only have this mango seasonally?
(We drank beer in Hungarian pubs this weekend 🙂)

I actually didn't ask that, but I am quite sure they'd have at least one stunning sour whenever you come :)

What an awesome tour! I love that there is an inclusive and adventurous craft beer scene in almost every corner of the world. What better way to learn about the culture and history than from a brewer passionate about what he does!

I don’t know if I could pick between the east coast and west coast ipa and probs my would have gone for both of them.

Thanks for taking us on such an exotic tour! !BEER

I actually liked the Dobbel the most of the conventional beers. And the sour for sure :)

When we visit a place, it definitely reminds us of it later, so after watching its pictures and videos, we feel relaxed once again.

Sounds like a cool place. I find it funny that businesses everywhere will have signs in English. That makes it easier for me, but maybe not for all the locals.

It is a cool place :) And maybe they target both Hungarians and expats, that wouldn't be that uncommon in a city like Budapest :)

All the people I met there spoke fluent English, and the founder even lived in the UK for a couple of years.

I have noticed that a lot of advertising uses English all around Europe even if it is aimed at a local audience. Is it considered cool? I would think that some regard it as bad for their culture.

I heard some people talking at a station. It was a German couple seeing off their Israeli friend and they were talking English. The Israeli said that all the kids over there want to talk English rather than Hebrew. They must be exposed to so much English online and in music. I will still try to learn other languages anyway.

Well, speaking for the Czech Republic, Prague has an important share of expats, and most places here in the capital are English-friendly, having menus and signs in both languages. With a few exceptions in the suburbs, or several mainly expats' venues.

Once you leave Prague, you would hardly meet English advertisements, or even menus when it comes to small town and villages. Still, some people there would have doormats saying Welcome rather than Vítejte for some reason :) I am quite sure it would be the same in Hungary.

I know several Israeli people living here in Prague, and they feel unsafe showing off their origin by using Hebrew, so they speak English with each other in public. I can imagine many young Israeli could feel similar way. Just to frame it, Czechs aren’t particularly hostile to the Israeli, quite the contrary. Even the local far right has others on the top of their hate list.

Oh, and yes - if there's a chance to learn a language, do so! :)

Hello! I think you have a fantastic philosophy on travel. I completely agree that connecting with locals and immersing yourself in their language and customs truly enriches the experience. It’s all about making the most of your journey. As you said, what's the point otherwise?

Also, I find the combination of mango and vanilla to be delicious! That’s such a unique flavor for a beer.

It's not that unique for sours, is it?

I loved reading this post, it’s such a refreshing take on what travel should be about. Getting to know people, soaking in the language and culture, and sharing a beer or two. Unity sounds like a place with a real soul.
