Nuremberg Old Town

There’s much more from Nuremberg that I haven’t shared yet. It’s high time to do so before I’ll forgot some of the details. I’ve already written about the imperial castle, so let’s start our journey at the Beim Tiergärtnertor Square right underneath the castle walls. It used to be a “rinc”, the most important marketplace in the city; only the wealthiest merchants lived in the surrounding buildings, which are truly representative.

O Norimberku toho mám k napsání ještě dost. Tak pojďme na to, než zapomenu na nějaké detaily. O císařském hradu jsem se rozepsal minule, tak dnes začneme naši pouť v podhradí, na náměstí Beim Tiergärtnertor. To sloužilo jako rynek a nejdůležitější tržiště ve městě. Domky na náměstí patřily těm nejbohatším kupcům, a tak jsou opravdu reprezentativní.

The house in the back is the birthplace of a famous renaissance painter Albrecht Dürer. I remember his portrait of his own mother from my high school. Here it is. I guess you can imagine why it would stuck in mind of a teenager :)

Ten dům vzadu je rodným domem slavného renesančního malíře Albrechta Dürera. Z gymplu si pamatuju jeho portrét vlastní matky. Tady je. Asi si umíte představit, proč uvízl v paměti puberťáka :)

Anyways, I could encounter the artist himself face to face. Yes, I was familiar with self-portraits and saw one in Prado in Madrid several months ago; I am aware that he looked nothing like his mother, more like a 60’s rockstar, but the statue empowered that impression.

Každopádně tady jsem se mohl potkat i s umělcem samotným. Ano, znám i jeho autoportréty a jeden jsem viděl před pár měsíci v madridském Pradu, vím, že nevypadal jako jeho matka, ale jako rocková hvězda ze 60. let, kterýžto pocit tahle socha jen umocnila.

St. Sebaldus Church

Albrecht Dürer’s statue oversees one of the oldest and most important churches in Nuremberg, St. Sebaldus Church from the 12th century. It was originally built as a Romanesque basilica and rebuilt many times afterwards. Hence it combines several architectonical styles – gothic chancel and towers from the 15th century and middle 17th century baroque galleries need to be mentioned at least. The church takes its name from St. Sebaldus, an Anglo-Saxon missionary to Germany who is also the patron saint of Nuremberg.

Socha Albrechta Dürera zhlíží na jeden z nejstarších a nejdůležitějších norimberských kostelů, kostel Sv. Sebalda z 12. století. Ten byl původně postaven jako románská bazilika, ale v průběhu staletí byl mnohokrát upravován. A tak kombinuje několik architektonických stylů. Za zmínku stojí gotické kněžiště a věže z 15. století nebo barokní galerie z poloviny 17. století. Kostel je zasvěcen Sv. Sebaldovi, anglosaskému misionáři, který působil v německých zemích, a který je patronem Norimberku.

Some of my dear readers might find this rare as I did, some others may find common. Visitors are supposed to pay an admission fee and a stern-looking lady supervised the donation box so I guess everybody actually tosses a coin or two.

Některým z mých ctěných čtenářů to může připadat stejně zvláštní jako mně, jiným zcela běžné. Každopádně návštěvníci by měli zaplatit vstupné. A protože nad kasičkou dohlíží velmi přísně vypadající dáma, myslím, že minci nebo dvě opravdu daruje každý.

My German is very poor but from what I understood, those are processional figures that were carried around at Easter or other occasions. They are genuine, few hundred years old and for sale. Would you like to decorate your house with them? Get your savings ready, then! I don’t remember exactly, but they cost several thousand euro each.

Moje němčina je mizerná, ale z toho, co jsem pochopil, jsou na fotce figuríny, které byly noseny v čele procesí na Velikonoce a při podobných příležitostech. Jsou původní, několik století staré a na prodej. Chtěli byste je domů? Tak rozbijte prasátko. Nepamatuju si to přesně, ale na cenovce u každé byly čtyři číslice. V eurech, samozřejmě.

The Old Town

When I left the church, I began to feel quite hungry. Fortunately, local farmers’ markets are held just across the corner, at Hauptmarkt Square. I knew that for sure – Hauptmarkt literary means the main market. Fruits, vegetables, wine, coffee, local sausages or just street food are on sale there. A great place to taste Bavarian dishes and chill a bit.

Když jsem vyšel z kostela, začal jsem mít hlad. Naštěstí se hned za rohem, na náměstí Hauptmarkt, konají farmářské trhy. Šel jsem na jistotu, Hauptmarkt je totiž hlavní tržiště. Na prodej je tu ovoce, zelenina, víno, káva, místní uzeniny i street food. Fajn místo na malou ochutnávku bavorské kuchyně a trochu toho odpočinku.

However, I was very confused by this ad with a pig's arse. Who the heck is the target audience of such an advertisement!?

Tahle reklama s prasečím zadkem mě každopádně hodně rozhodila. Kdo je sakra cílová skupina pro takovou formu propagace!?

The city walls

Even thought the medieval city walls of Nuremberg have been damaged many times, including by air raids during World War II, they still surround the old city, more or less – about 80% of the 5 kilometres of fortification is still standing. The oldest walls were built up in the 12th century and the city kept reinforcing and extending them until the 16th century when such city walls become obsolete and lost their defensive purpose.

I když byly norimberské hradby mnohokrát poškozeny a prošly si i spojeneckým bombardováním za druhé světové války, stále ještě ohraničují staré město. Dodnes stojí asi 80 % z původních 5 kilometrů hradeb. Ty nejstarší byly vybudovány ve 12. století a od té doby je město rozšiřovalo a posilovalo až do 16. století. Tehdy hradby jako takové zastaraly a přišly o svůj účel.

Yet some parts of the medieval fortification found a new purpose. This part serves as a bike path and inline route.

Ale některé části hradeb našly nový účel. Tahle část slouží jako stezka pro cyklisty a inline bruslení.

Can you see the wooden corridor above the river? I have no idea what it is meant for today, but it is being reconstructed and I accidentally sneaked inside and took a picture when the workers weren’t paying attention.

Vidíte tu dřevěnou chodbu nad řekou? Netuším, k čemu má dnes sloužit, ale zrovna ji rekonstruovali, a když se dělníci nedívali, vlezl jsem dovnitř a vyfotil si ji.

What surprised me the most, though, was the Operahaus U-Bahn station. The train actually goes through the city walls in there.

Ale nejvíc mě překvapila stanice U-Bahn Operahaus. Vlak tu jede přímo skrz hradby.

Laufertorturm is supposed to be one of the most impressive towers of the Nuremberg city walls. Alas, it is being reconstructed… Anyways, stay tuned! I will take you outside the old city next time.
