Milevské Maškary – A Traditional Slavic Carnival Parade
Imagine 9th-century Bohemia. St. Constantine and St. Methodius, two Byzantine Christian missionaries came to spread their faith and teach the local Slavic tribes the alphabet they had devised to suit the dialects spoken by the Western Slavs. One of the folk customs they mention in their chronicles is “masopust” which seems to be heavily inspired by Roman “carniprivium”. No wonder the keen character who is executed at the end of the procession is called “Bakus” and could remind you of Bacchus, the Roman incarnation of the Greek god of wine, insanity, and ritual madness, Dionysus. Well, so much for the historical background. Let’s see how this one millennia-old custom looks nowadays in Milevsko, a small South-Bohemian town with an established traditional masopust procession called Milevské Maškary.
Milevsko is a town of mere 8,000 inhabitants, yet there are usually around 1,000 masks in the parade. Not all of them make it to the end, though some fail to stay sober enough to carry their heavy costume and seek refuge in one of many bars around the way. Bacchus would be proud of his Czech disciples. Anyways, the festival starts in the morning so people can get drunk early. The opening part was performed by a guest folkloric group from Moravia. The Moravians brought horsemen, a bear, and several other characters in costumes that are more or less the same for generations.
Once their performance was over, the Moravians took a lift to the start of the parade. Note the fancy municipal truck. Bakus used it while he ran for president this January (yes, the presidential election took place here in the Czech Republic recently, feel free to check out this @phortun’s post for further detail). Alas, he did not succeed (and that is why he shall be executed this year).
A protože, žel bohu, neuspěl, nezbývá, než ho popravit.
Masopust is a playful festival of joy, tasty food and drinking. So the visitors spend the break eating and drinking :) Some of them got almost as drunk as the masks that did not finish the procession. Anyways, here they come:
As you can see, many were not really traditional. Those mops were the best, though. They had distinct swingy moves, so they actually looked like mopping the road.
Bakus and his execution
Here comes Bakus, the very last mask in the parade.
A tady přijíždí Bakus, poslední maškara v průvodu.
He was taken up to the stage and eaten by a bear. To protect children from such a drastic view, the bear’s feast took place behind a sheet. The bear gobbled everything except Bakus’ giant head…
… but the festival obviously doesn’t end like that. Once the old Bakus is dead, a new one spawns on his place. It is the kid in the middle of the stage. The new Bakus would grow old and fat within one year so that he could be killed next winter.
Ale tak to samozřejmě nekončí. Jakmile starý Bakus zemře, objeví se nový. Malý Bakus je ten klučina uprostřed pódia. Během roku vyroste a ztloustne, aby mohl být zabit příští zimu.
