Contemporary and Traditional Street Art of Nuremberg

I really liked Nuremberg and the way the city has evolved since WWII. And I definitely enjoyed its street art, both traditional and contemporary. Let’s start with the latter as it fits the common definition of street art better. And it is obviously dealing with the issues that we all have to cope with. Like ecology and decarbonization, a big thing in Western Europe. However green Nuremberg is, at least some artists would like it even greener.

Norimberk jsem si užil a líbilo se mi, jak se město vypořádalo s následky druhé světové války. A bavil mě i tamní street art, ten tradiční i novodobý. Začněme s novodobým, protože na něj pochopitelně lépe sedí novodobá definice street artu. A protože se vztahuje k aktuálním problémům, se kterými se musíme vypořádávat. Třeba k ekologii a dekarbonizaci, což je v západní Evropě velké téma. Jakkoli je nyní Norimberk ekologický, minimálně někteří umělci by šli ještě dál.**

Most of the art is rather playful with no strong appeals, though. I really enjoyed this wicker dancer in one of the side streets close to the main train station.

Ale většina pouličních instalací je hlavně hravá bez nějakých silných apelů. Třeba tahle proutěná tanečnice z jedné z vedlejších uliček za hlavním nádražím.

I believe this character is a knitting superhero, something between Spiderman and your dexterous grandma. I admire the creativity of the author(s) and hope an urban legend, or better a comic series would cover the back story of this superhero soon. "Knitma" could work, huh?

Myslím, že tohle je nějaký pletací superhrdina. Něco mezi Spidermanem a hodně šikovnou babičkou. Obdivuju kreativitu autora/ů a doufám, že se brzo objeví nějaká městská legenda, nebo ještě lépe komiksová série popisující příběh téhle postavy. Anglicky by to mohl/a být "Knitma". Jak to zní?

So called guerrilla gardening is common in Prague either nowadays, but not in such a large scale. This is arguably the best maintained guerrilla garden I’ve ever seen.

Takzvaný guerrilla gardening je dneska v Praze běžný, ale ne v takovém rozsahu. Tohle je pravděpodobně nejlépe udržovaná guerrillová zahrádka, kterou jsem kdy viděll.

Another guerrilla garden, this time in pallets, aiming on enhancing the community life. I met nobody there on Sunday morning, though.

A další guerrillová zahrádka tentokrát v paletách. Očividně má podpořit komunitní život a sousedské vztahy, ale v neděli ráno tam nikdo nebyl.

In Nuremberg, even birds live in fancy houses.

V Norimberku si i ptáci žijí na úrovni.

The Nuremberg partnership with my hometown, Prague, is commemorated by this work by Czech artist Jakub Janovský. But I didn’t quite get it.

Norimberské partnerství s Prahou má připomínat tohle dílo českého umělce Jakuba Janovského. Ale přiznám se, že jsem ho moc nepochopil.

Old Street Art

Bavaria traditionally adhered to Catholicism while most German countries leaned towards Protestantism. Such small catholic statues of Virgin Mary and saints in the streets shall definitely be classified as street art – they had the very same purpose as the contemporary artworks in public spaces. They are scattered in niches all around the old town.

Bavorsko je tradičně katolické, zatímco většina německých zemí postupně inklinovala k protestanství. Tahle katolické sochy Panny Marie a svatých by měly být pokládány za street art, protože měly úplně stejný účel jako moderní díla ve veřejném prostoru. Narazíte na ně ve výklencích po celém starém městě.

A ghost and a saint. I sense an epic story here :)
