I got denied entry to Mexico - Do not cross the border here!

As the title suggest this story is not the brightest one, but I will still try to portray it in the best light possible. The whole idea why I ended up in Guatemala was to eventually make it to Mexico. As I already had to compromise on my travel plans after finding out that Nicaragua is still enforcing covaids measures I was hoping getting to mexico will provide me with six months of time to enjoy this rather big country.

Well life had other plans for me obviously. The day D arrived and I was packing up my things and saying goodbye to Carlos - the host of my hostel in Huehue. Not knowing I will see him very soon again we shake hands and hugged each other expecting a long time no see...

I took a direct bus to the border city called La Mesilla. From there it is possible to walk or take a tuk-tuk to the border. It must be the weirdest border ever. You can literary just walk through. Nobody will stop you. Locals go around their business without being checked at all. Every day here and there. As a traveler you have different problem though you need a stamp from the border patrol.

The Guatemalan guard was super easy and even wished me a nice trip. Than I had to take a "colectivo" to a Mexican border. Again, nobody would check and I would go through unnoticed. But I wanted and needed to cross officially.

Some people I have met already told me it is sometimes sketchy with Mexico. So I have prepared a copy of a passport and my onward travel ticket. That would work but for some reason the border patrol wanted more. He checked my documents and was becoming suspicious of everything I have given to him. Asking me about my itinerary I was explaining my plans in broken Spanish. He than sent me out of his office to get other papers he wanted. Luckily a French girl was able to provide me with her hotspot and I was able to make a booking and get my bank statement.

All these documents should have been enough and after printing them out I have came back to him. What else can he ask me I thought?

His questions were beyond weird and I wasn't sure if I am answering them right. In any case he pulled of a piece of paper stating what he officially needs from me. I had about everything but he insisted that one night booking isn't enough and I need to provide him with detailed itinerary and stuff. By this time I was over with it. I felt like let me just leave dude. And so I did. I have left him saying "no possible, no problemo".

The journey back started and I felt weird for about half of the trip. Not knowing if I should cry or laugh I was replaying the whole situation in my head over and over. Could I have done anything better? Was he just being an idiot?

In the other "colectivo" on my way back to the Guatemalan border some guy told me it is a new Mexican policy. If so, than I will probably never visit again as I hate paperwork and even when presented everything it wasn't enough.

And so I arrived back to Huehue and surprised Carlos with my reappearance.I shared my story with him and started feeling better about the whole thing. Everything happens for a reason and I was meant to spend more time in Guatemala...

All the best,

Global Local

Consider yourself lucky because who knows, it probably saved your life. I'm astounded that anyone wants to visit Mexico at all, consider the ever-spreading cartel violence. I've seen some horrific videos that make me never want to travel there at all. Stay safe in your travels! :)

@evernoticethat Thanks for your kind words. Although with such attitude it would be hard to go anywhere really. I am just in Ecuador where they killed a presidential candidate down the street the other day...
