Esta crónica inicia como todo en la vida, con algo de historia: la historia que vivimos y la que nos contaron. Aquella era la segunda vez que intentaba llegar a tan remoto paraje, pues la vez anterior no habíamos tenido éxito. En aquella me vi muy cerca del Salto, tan cerca que la impotencia por casi llegar y no lograrlo fue muy grande.

That was the second time I tried to reach such a remote place, because the previous time we had not succeeded. That time I was very close to the waterfall, so close that the impotence of almost reaching it and not making it was very great.

Fue por ello que se organizó la excursión. La Lore corrió la voz, o más bien, el texto vía WhatsApp a aquellos amigos que en otras ocasiones ya le habían comentado de su interés por aventurarse al monte. Muchas debieron ser las ganas, pues se dejaron «convencer» por una guía que idea de llegar no tenía (la Lore) y experiencia muy poca, solo la de haberse perdido en varias ocasiones y haber estado muy cerca del Salto al igual que yo. Esas ganas probablemente se duplicaron debido a los meses de encierro y otras tristezas que había generado una pandemia a nivel mundial. Y fue bajo esas circunstancias, con esa historia, que partimos a Narnia 5 atropellados y 15 novatos -algunos no tanto-, para su bautizo de fuego.

La Lore spread the word, or rather, the text via WhatsApp to those friends who on other occasions had already told her of their interest in venturing into the mountains. They must have been very eager, because they let themselves be "convinced" by a guide who had no idea of how to get there (Lore) and very little experience, only that of having been lost on several occasions and having been very close to the Salto, just like me. Those desires were probably doubled due to the months of confinement and other sadness that a worldwide pandemic had generated. And it was under those circumstances, with that history, that we left for Narnia, 5 atropellados and 15 novices -some not so much-, for their baptism of fire.

¿Pero por qué Narnia? Asumo que fui el autor intelectual del nombre. En un principio lo asociaba a un lugar remoto, distante, de difícil acceso, un mundo que va más allá de la tierra, algo sobrenatural y sería una muy buena metáfora a utilizar. Ahora también me viene a la mente aquello de la magia, y sí, «se alinearon todos los astros» para que todos pudiésemos estar, para que aquellos que en varias ocasiones ya se habían decidido a aventurarse, lo hicieran, para que el camión que nos llevaría fuese más que puntual, al esperarnos a las 7:30 a. m., 30 minutos antes de lo acordado, en el puente de 100 y Autopista. Por si la magia hasta ese momento no era creíble, a esto se le sumó que nuestra partida el 28 de noviembre, también coincidía con el cumpleaños de una atropellada muy especial: Anais. Desde antes, ya estábamos haciendo todos los hechizos para que su cumpleaños fuera toda una celebración.

But why Narnia? I assume I was the mastermind behind the name. At first I associated it with a remote, distant, hard to reach place, a world beyond the earth, something supernatural, and it would be a very good metaphor to use. Now also comes to mind that of magic, and yes, "all the stars aligned" so that we could all be there, so that those who on several occasions had already decided to venture, did so, so that the truck that would take us was more than punctual, waiting for us at 7:30 a.m., 30 minutes earlier than agreed, on the bridge of 100 and Autopista. As if the magic up to that moment was not credible, to this was added that our departure on November 28, also coincided with the birthday of a very special roadkill: Anais. Since before, we were already doing all the spells to make her birthday a celebration.

El recorrido en nuestro bus se hizo rápido y ameno, nos presentamos todos, algunos se conocían y muchos no, por lo que la breve introducción de quienes éramos se hacía necesaria. El mismo grupo de: El Atropello, esta vez con nuevas caras y renovados deseos. Apenas llegamos a Las Terrazas ya estábamos tomándonos la primera foto, la primera con la bandera, que luego siguió ondeando por la carretera.

The tour in our bus was fast and pleasant, we all introduced ourselves, some knew each other and many did not, so the brief introduction of who we were was necessary. The same group of: El Atropello, this time with new faces and renewed desires. As soon as we arrived at Las Terrazas we were already taking our first picture, the first one with the flag, which then continued waving along the road.

Llegamos a la casa del campesino. Pedro no estaba sino su tío «Betún». Desde lejitos saludamos a la familia y luego «Betún» nos guió hasta la poceta. Una vez allí ya era otro mundo, estábamos a minutos de conquistar Narnia. Sus aguas estaban congeladas, pero nada comparado con el calor de la amistad sincera. Ya era hora de empezar a celebrar el cumple de Anais, y que mejor regalo que una canción de feliz cumpleaños a la vez que una ebullición de felicidad en forma de agua salpicada sobre la cumpleañera.

We arrived at the farmer's house. Pedro was not there but his uncle "Betún". From a distance we greeted the family and then "Betún" guided us to the pond. Once there it was another world, we were minutes away from conquering Narnia. Its waters were freezing, but nothing compared to the warmth of sincere friendship. It was time to start celebrating Anais' birthday, and what better gift than a happy birthday song and a boiling of happiness in the form of water splashed over the birthday girl.

Así entre guerras de agua, cuentos, chistes, compartimos con felicidad la compañía, las aguas congeladas, las galletas y hasta el pelly. Luego de un tiempo en el Salto decidimos subir a la poceta de arriba, el lugar perfecto para algunas fotos, tirarse de la roca, explorar los alrededores y para ya ir pensando en el próximo destino de El Atropello.

So between water wars, stories, jokes, we happily shared the company, the frozen water, the cookies and even the pelly. After a while in the waterfall we decided to go up to the upper pool, the perfect place to take some pictures, jump off the rock, explore the surroundings and to start thinking about the next destination of El Atropello.

Iba siendo hora de volver a casa de Pedro para armar el campamento, todo fue bastante rápido a excepción del enredo para armar la casa -más que una casa, un hotel- de Susi; la casa de campaña más grande que he visto. Esta vez no hubo que cocinar, así que algunos comimos la comida que llevamos, otros ya se la habían comido en el almuerzo, así que comieron algún pan.

It was time to go back to Pedro's house to set up camp, everything went pretty fast except for the mess to set up Susi's house -more than a house, a hotel-; the biggest tent house I have ever seen. This time we didn't have to cook, so some of us ate the food we brought, others had already eaten it at lunch, so they ate some bread.

Llegó la hora de encontrarnos en la súper casa, comer maní, conversar, jugar a las palabras. Luego, sorprender nuevamente a la cumpleañera con otro felicidades, esta vez con dos panques en forma de cake de dos pisos con una vela bombita que alumbró la noche. La magia seguí siendo palpable en Narnia. Ya llegando las 9 p. m. algunos nos fuimos a acostar otros en el hotel se quedaron despiertos hasta más tarde para jugar a las películas.

It was time to meet at the super house, eat peanuts, talk, play with words. Then, to surprise the birthday girl again with another congratulations, this time with two pancakes in the shape of a double-decker cake with a light bulb candle that lit up the night. The magic was still palpable in Narnia. By 9 p.m. some of us went to bed, others stayed up later at the hotel to play movies.
